This is very good little book about writing and literature. It probes into how a writer obtains his authentic voice. Alvarez demonstrates the importance of being able to listen and presents different poems to help one see the difference in voice between different poets by listening to how they sound. He then teases out the public perception of different writers. In some cases disparaging those whose career has been highlighted by drug or some other type of abuse. ( )
