Farmer's Calendar.

THE balance-sheet of the farm hangs very much on how the owner puts in his work for this

month. Unless the soil is well worked and well mixed with a

free coating of manure, the crop will be apt to be light, and un

less the best kinds of seed are sown in a proper way, the little that is grown will be apt to fetch a very low price. The competition is now so sharp that it is those only who bring the highest intelligence to bear, that reap the large profits from their farms. May is always a busy month, and the only way is to make the most of every fair day in working the ground and getting in the seed, so that the first of June may not find the farmer behind time. Small grains should be sown as soon as the land will work well. If there Claid down to grass last fall, to be is a lot that ought to have been seeded this spring, there is no time to lose, and the first of the month is late enough. Seed it at once. Barley is the only grain with which grass seed does

Farmer's Calendar.

IT seems to be taken for granted that Indian corn is, on the whole, the best plant for the preparation of ensilage, and those who have silos to fill ought to bear in mind that it is best to plant early in this month

so as to give it time to approach maturity before the early frosts. The large and coarse ensilage corn is not so good as the small kinds. Plant far enough apart to have it ear out well, that is to set and form ears. When they begin to glaze it will be high time to cut and pack down the corn. Put in an acre or two of Hungarian, also. If you use. five pecks of seed to the acre,

the stalk will be so small that it can be easily dried, and the cows will eat it with as much relish as they will the best of hay 21 Tu. Cr. high. O en.. made from other grasses. down. The hoed crops need down the weeds. The bugs and close looking after now, to keep the worms are busy as they can very be. Plaster, lime, hellebore, and Paris green, put on here and there, will clean out most insects. Don't cut asparagus after the hot. 20th. It weakens the roots, and does a great deal of harm.
