Spread thy great name through every land,
Each idol deity dethrone,

Let earth with all her tongues confess
That thou the Lord art God alone.

HYMN IV.

Devotion.

1 BEFORE Jehovah's awful throne,
Ye nations, bow, with sacred joy:
Know that the Lord is God alone:
He can create, and he destroy.

2 His sovereign, pow'r, without our aid,
Made us of clay, and form'd us men ;
And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,
He brought us to his fold again.

3 Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love!

Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand, When rolling years shall cease to move. 4 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs, High as the heav'ns our voices raise : And earth, with her ten thousand tongues, Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise. HYMN V.

The wisdom of God.

1 IN all our Maker's vast designs
Lo! his eternal wisdom shines;
Through all creation spread abroad,
Loud it proclaims the maker, God.
2 With rev'rence our admiring eyes
Survey thy wonders in the skies;
Thy wisdom round the world we see,
The spacious earth is full of thee.
3 Above the earth, beyond the sky,
Stands thy high throne of majesty ;.

Nor time nor place thy power restrain,
Nor bound thy universal reign.

4 Amazing knowledge, vast and great!
What large extent, what lofty height!
Our souls, with all the powers they boast,
Are in the boundless prospect lost.

5 Lord, who can speak thy wondrous deeds!
Thy wisdom all our thoughts exceeds;
Vast and unsearchable thy ways,
Vast and immortal be thy praise.

HYMN VI.

The justice of God.

1 GREAT God, to thee, the mighty King,
Whose sovereign rule the world obeys,
With reverent hearts thy people bring
The tribute of their humble praise.

2 The earth's great seeptre fills thy hand;
And, high enthron'd in majesty,
Thou givest thence to every land
The laws of truth and equity.

3 Unerring justice, Lord, is thine;
And every nation shall confess,
That thy decrees are all divine,
And all thy ways are righteonsness;
4 In judgment wise, thou wilt bestow
To every soul its due reward;
Unceasing joy the good shall know,
And live forever with their Lord.

5 But they who tread the sinner's path,
And dare thy righteous laws disown,
Shall meet with due returns from thee,
And reap the fruit which they have sown,

HYMN VII.

The mercy of God.

1 0 THOU, the wretched's sure retreat,
Who dost their cares control,
And with the cheerful smile of peace
Revive the fainting soul!

Did ever thy relenting ear

The humble plea disdain ?
Or when did plaintive misery sigh,
Or supplicate, in vain ?

3 Whoe'r to thee for pardon sue
In penitential tears,

Thy goodness calms their restless doubts,
And dissipates their fears.

4 New life from thy refreshing grace,
Their sinking hearts receive!

Thy gentlest, best-lov'd attribute,
To pity and forgive.

5 From that blest source propitious hope
Appears serenely bright,
And sheds her soft diffusive beam
O'e sorrow's dismal night.

Our griefs confess her vital power,
And bless the friendly ray,
Which ushers in the smiling morn
Of everlasting day.

HYMN VIII.

The greatness and majesty of God.

1 THE Lord of glory reigns; he reigns on high;
His robes of state are strength and majesty;
This wide creation rose at his command;
Built by his word, and 'stablish'd by his hand:
Long stood his throne, ere he began creation,
And his own Godhead is the firm foundation.

2 God is th' eternal King: Thy foes in vain
Raise their rebellion to confound thy reign
In vain the storms, in vain the floods arise,
And roar, and toss their waves against the skies.
Foaming at heav'n, they rage with wild commotion,
But heav'n's high arches scorn the swelling ocean.
3 Ye tempests, rage no more! ye floods, be still!
And the mad world submissive to his will:
Built on his truth, his church must ever stand:
Firm are his promises, and strong his hand :
See his own sons, when they appear before him,
Bow at his footstool, and with fear adore him!

HYMN IX.

To God the Creator..

1 ALMIGHTY Maker, God!
How wondrous is thy name!
Thy glories how diffus'd abroad
Through all creation's frame !

2 Nature, in ev'ry dress,

Her humble homage pays;
And does a thousand ways express.
Her undissembled praise.

3 Our souls would rise and sing
Our Great Creator, too;

Fain would our tongues adore our King,
And pay the homage due.

Let joy and worship spend

The remnant of our days, And oft to God our souls ascend

In grateful songs of praise.

HYMN X.

God known by his works.

1 GREAT God! the heav'n's well-order'd frame Declares the glories of thy name;

There thy rich works of wonder shine;
A thousand starry beauties there,
A thousand radiant marks appear
Of boundless pow'r, and skill divine.
2 From night to day, from day to night,
The dawning and the dying light,
Lectures of heav'nly wisdom read;
With silent eloquence they raise
Our thoughts to the Creator's praise,
And neither sound nor language need.

3 Yet their divine instructions run
Far as the journeys of the sun;

All nature joins to shew thy praise :
Thus God in every creature shines;
Fair is the book of nature's lines,

Which shew's thy wisdom and thy grace.
HYMN XI.

The voice of nature.

1 THERE is a God, all nature speaks,
Through earth, and air, and seas, and skies:
See, from the clouds his glory breaks,
When the first beams of morning rise.

2 The rising sun, serenely bright,

O'er the wide world's extended frame, Inseribes, in characters of light,

His mighty Maker's glorious name. 3 Diffusing life, his influence spreads;

1

And health and plenty smile around;
And fruitful fields, and verdant meads,
Are with a thousand blessings crown'd.
4 The flow'ry tribes, all blooming, rise
Above the weak attempts of art;
Their bright, inimitable dyes
Speak sweet conviction to the heart.

5 Ye curious minds, who roam abroad,
And trace creation's wonders o'er,
