The substance of the following discourse was delivered in the Tammany street church, on the 19th ult. as a service preparatory to the ordination of four elders, who were, there and then, ordained according to the principles therein exhibited. Having been revised and enlarged, it is now given to the public at the request of the elders of that church.

Judging from the experience which I have had under similar circumstances, it may be presumed, that this discourse will call forth considerable criticism. If so, I have but one favour to solicit; which is this:-that those who may feel themselves called upon to sit in judgment upon my opinions, would expose any errors in principle which they may detect, and establish any positions they may assume, by fair scriptural proof. I shall then hold myself indebted to them, as I shall to any man who may help me to understand my Bible better than I do,-and feel no shame whatever in changing my opinions, when convinced they are wrong. If they act differently, they may wound my feelings, but can neither affect my judgment, nor alter my

course.
