THE Author of this Treatise, a retired student, had employed himself during many years in researches illustrative of the symbolical import of the mythology of the pantheons of heathen antiquity. The pursuit, made without any fixed purpose, had afforded much amusement to a long and happy life, when he learned that the Camden Society of Cambridge had become the advocates of the symbolical import of the several parts of the structure and of the ornaments of Churches. Conceiving that reasons were to be found for the symbols so used, he entered upon the undertaking of shewing the rationale of these symbols, with the intention of dedicating the work to that Society. When however it was found that the Society had become so much enamoured of Romanist symbols as to be eager to imitate Romanist errors, the purpose was abandoned, and this work is now offered to the public unpatronized, as one of the numerous articles that almost daily issue from the machinery of the press. |
