When Raphael Menghs painted this picture for the king of Spain, to whom he was principal painter, his imagination was still filled with the idea of the picture painted by Corregio, on the same subject, which is in the gallery of Dresden, and before noticed under number 571. On comparing them, we see that the modern artist has not by any means imitated the ancient master, notwitstanding which, in seeing the one, we cannot avoid thinking of the other; it is particularly in the obscure light and in the colouring, that these two works have most resemblance, the infant represented in both is highly resplendant.

This large and fine picture is one of the best performances of Menghs, the colour of it is brilliant, the touch sweet, and rich, the shadows vigourous and transparent, but unfortunately being painted on wood, the pannel is very much warped.

After remaining a long time at the palace of Saint Ildephonse, this picture was sent to Madrid, and is now to be seen in the Museum of that city.

The painter appears in the piece as the spectator on the left, behind Saint Joseph. Raphael Morghen has made a very fine engraving from this picture.

Lorsque Raphaël Menghs composa ce tableau pour le roi d'Espagne, dont il était premier peintre, il avait encore l'imagination frappée du tableau de la galerie de Dresde, où Corrège a peint le même sujet, donné précédemment sous le n°. 571. En les comparant on voit que le peintre moderne n'a point imité l'ancien maître, cependant on ne saurait s'empêcher de penser à l'un en voyant l'autre. C'est surtout dans le clair-obscur et dans le coloris que ces deux ouvrages ont le plus de rapports. L'enfant étant resplendissaut, dans l'une et dans l'autre peinture.

Ce grand et beau tableau est un des meilleurs ouvrages de Menghs, la couleur en est brillante, la touche suave et moelleuse les ombres vigoureuses et transparentes; il est peint sur bois, malheureusement le panneau a beaucoup joué. Après être resté long-temps au palais de Saint-Ildephonse, ce tableau fut ensuite rapporté à Madrid, et se voit maintenant dans le Musée de cette ville. Le peintre est représenté sous les traits du spectateur à gauche, derrière saint Joseph. Raphaël Morghen a fait une très-belle gravure d'après ce tableau
