If I found it necessary to go into a history of the legislation on bankruptcy in this country at any length, I fear that the task would be not only most wearisome to your Lordships, but highly unprofitable in itself. I think it sufficient, in the first place, to remind your Lordships that the last Consolidation Act which was passed in this country on the subject of bankruptcy was in the year 1849. From that year to the year 1859 the law as to bankruptcy, with very little alteration, stood on that footing.
