62 In the Middle Ages there were no religious festivals of childhood, apart from
the great seasonal festivals which were often pagan rather than Christian. From
the fifteenth century on, as we have already seen, artists depicted certain
often in competition with each other, and all the rest is regarded as of secondary
importance: religious and cultural activities, and even more so rest and
amusement; meetings with friends for a meal or drinks are considered as a mere
(but the knight had been initiated after what had become a religious ceremony).
The sacrament of marriage could have ennobled the conjugal union and given it
a spiritual value, as also to the family. In fact it simply made the union legitimate.
