Ovide, en parlant de Galatée, de ses amours avec Acis et de la jalousie qu'en éprouva Polyphème, ne dit rien du triomphe qu'elle reçut ensuite des divinités marines. Mais les poëtes italiens du XVIe siècle ont continué, changé et varié les fictions des anciens; c'est donc en lisant leurs ouvrages que Raphaël a conçu l'idée de cette composition pleine de charme, que l'on croirait véritablement inspirée par la vue de quelque peinture antique, tant elle a de rapport avec la manière de faire des anciens. C'est dans le palais d'Augustin Chigi que Raphaël peignit cette fresque; elle orne l'un des bouts de la galerie où se trouve peinte l'histoire de Psyché. On sera curieux sans doute de voir la manière dont Raphaël lui-même s'est exprimé relativement à ce tableau, dans une lettre qu'il adressa à son ami le comte Balthasar Castiglione. Après avoir dit qu'il lui envoie plusieurs dessins, il ajoute : « Pour la Galatée, je me croirais un grand maître s'il y avait seulement la moitié de tout ce que vous m'écrivez; mais je reconnais dans vos éloges l'amitié que vous me portez, et je dis que, pour peindre une belle, il me faudrait en voir plusieurs, avec la condition que vous seriez avec moi pour m'aider à faire choix du meilleur. Mais les bons juges et les bons modèles sont rares, j'opére donc d'après une certaine idée qui me vient à l'esprit. A-t-elle quelque excellence sous le rapport de l'art, je ne sais, mais je m'efforce d'y arriver. » Le triomphe de Galatée a été gravé par Marc-Antoine, par Dorigny, et par M. Richomme. When speaking of Galathæa and of her amours with Acis, and the jealousy felt in consequence by Polyphemus, Ovid says nothing of the Triumph afterwards offered her by the Sea Divinities. But the Italian poets of the XVI century have continued, altered, and varied the fictions of the ancients; it is therefore in reading their works that Raphael conceived the idea of this charming composition, which might be thought to be truly inspired by the sight of some antique painting, so much resemblance does it bear with the style of working of the ancients. Raphael executed this fresco in the palace of Agostino Chigi: it adorns one of the ends of the Gallery where the History of Psyche is painted. No doubt the reader will be curious to see the manner Raphael expressed himself, relative to this picture, in a letter to his friend Balthazar Castiglione. After mentioning that he sends him several designs, he adds : « As to the Galathæa, I should consider myself a great master, if there was in it only half of what you write to me but I discover in your praises the friendship you bear me, and I must say that to paint a beauty, I ought to see several, with the condition that you should be there to assist me in making the best choice. But good judges and good models are scarce, I therefore am obliged to work after some random idea that comes athwart my mind.
