MARCHANDE DE BEIGNETS.

Gérard Dow a placé dans ce tableau une vieille femme, uue jeune fille, un enfant et un jeune homme. Ces différences d'âge ont donné au peintre le moyen de varier ses expressions de la manière la plus avantageuse. Suivant son habitude, il a rendu merveilleusement tous les accessoires, sans pourtant nuire à l'ensemble. La perfection minutieuse du travail n'empêche pas de voir une touche libre et un coloris frais. Le clair-obscur est très-vigoureux, mais il semble que, dans une scène de cette nature, représentée en plein air, les lumières ne devraient pas être aussi restreintes, qu'elles le sont en effet, en comparaison de la masse d'ombre.

THE FRITTER WOMAN.

Gerard Dow has placed in this picture an old woman, young lass, a boy, and a young man. These gradations of age have given the artist the means of varying his expressions most advantageosuly. According to his custom he has wonderfully rendered all the accessories, without however injuring the whole. The minute perfection of the work does not hide a free handling and a fresh colour. The light and shade is strong, but it seems that in a scene of this kind, represented in the open air, the body of light ought not to be as limited as in fact it is, compared with the shading.
