[29] Caution to young men.On Thursday the sheriff sentenced two young men to imprisonment, and to pay a fine, for assaulting and interrupting passengers on the high road, to the west of this city. [29] Accident by a cart.--Tuesday last, a man driving a cart near Oldmeldrum, was, owing to the horses taking fright by some sheep, it is said, suddenly appearing, thrown down and killed by the eart passing over him.

JULY.

[6] Honourable traits of character. The treasurer of the Gasgow Royal Infirmary has received, from a printer there, twenty shillings sterling, being a fine levied on some of his workmen, for ab senting themselves, from his office without liberty, to witness the bruising match between Molineaux and Fuller.

[o] Accident from a well closing in. Monday, a melancholy Occurrence took place at Pear mount, near Dumfries. While some people were digging a well, the sides of it rushed in, when three persons were in it, one of whom happened to be at the bottom, and unfortunately perished.

[13] Murderer condemned. Saturday, Manuel marre was capitally indicted at the admiralty sessions, for feloniously stabbing Mark Kirby, the master of the Suffolk transport, on board the said vessel while she was lying in the port of Tarragona. The jury found the prisoner guilty, and Sir W. Scott immediately passed sentence of death upon him.

[13] Fall from a precipice.~~~ Sunday se'ennight, a young man, while walking round the Caltonhill, a little to the north of Mr Wordsworth's stables, was seized with a fit, and fell over the precipice.

[18] Dishonesty punished.-At the Middlesex sessions, a carter in the service of Mr Thomas Wilshen, farmer of North Hold, Middlesez, was convicted of stealing the allowance of corn given to him for his master's horses. He was sentenced to be imprisoned two months and publicly whipped.

[18] Inquisition re-established. Papers from Madrid of the 28th ult. have reached town. They supply a long document issued under the royal authority for the re-establishment of the dark tribunal of the inquisition.

[20] Accident from a springgun-A melancholy accident happened on Sunday evening about eight o'clock, to a young woman living as a servant in a family on Sloane-terrace, by the explosion of a spring-gun, while she was walking in the nursery garden of Mr Allen, King's road.

[20] An honest man a match for the devil!-On Saturday the 2nd instant, Alexander Leckie, Paisley carrier, lost his pocket. book, containing L.26 6s. in King's-street, Glasgow, and offer. ed five guineas reward for its res toration. On Tuesday following, twenty-five guineas in a parcel, a long with the following letter, was sent him:---" Sor, you will res eve yer poket bok, and at the meney that yel get in it bit wan gine, and my brother the deve an me had a long cotast about it; we saw yo draping it at the head of King-street

AUGUST.

o] Murderers-At the Dorster assizes, Mary Cook, for the der of her female infant child, sentenced to be hanged on sday last, and her body anatoed. Thomas Morris, convict t Northampton assizes, for the der of his wife, was executed Faturday last.

A young man drowned in t.-A young man, in the emment of a brewer in this city, Eng gone to his work earlier à usual on Monday morning, found by the other workmen vred in one of the mash vats. [o] Fly-poison.-On Tuesday, Hasgow, a boy, three years old, in consequence of drinking a ntity of a composition for poiag flies.

10] Accident by a candle. on Tuesday night last, Isabella nston, wife of Mr Samuel Scott, maker in English-street, Dumhaving fallen asleep at a table which there was a candle burnunfortunately the candle feli her apron, which instantly set to the whole of her clothes, and re any assistance could be gi. her she was so dreadfully burnhat she died next evening. 15] Amazing credulity.-Joa Southcote's accouchement.s a certain fact, that there are sons of consideration in high life, o are the dupes of this artful man's imposture; among others lady of rank who has ordered nt to be made of solid gold, wise pap-spoons, and a boat of same metal, &c.

[15] A young man drowned.→ An inquest was held on Monday at Shipperton on the body of a young man who was drowned in what is called Shipperton Deep. He had gone too far with a cart and was drowned with the horse.

[15] Bite of a lap-dog.-On Wednesday last, a favorite lap-dog in the family of Lady C. Dorinton, residing at Great Stanmore, Middlesex, bit a male child, about six years old, in a dreadful manner in the arm. Symptoms of hydrophobia soon after appeared, and the child died on Friday last.

[22] A murderer attempts to destroy himself.--A few days since, pursuant to his sentence, at the late assizes, William Vincent was executed at the Devon gaol new drop, for the wilful murder of Thomas Willis, at Churaton Ferrers, in 1805. About seven o'clock on the morn ing of execution, the culprit cut his throat with a knife he had ob tained, but not so effectually as to deprive him of existence. He was brought in a bed to the platform, almost in a lifeless state. Immediately as he was turned off the blood gushed from the wound over his clothes, which rendered it a shocking sight to the spectators.

[22] Executions-This morn→ ing John Mitchell, for forgery; Henry Lye, John Field, (alias Jonathan Wild) for burglary; Mich ael Maroney, Francis Sturgess, and John Ashton, for highway robberies, were executed before the debtor's door, Old Bailey.

[24] Fire occasioned by a candle. About one o'clock on Satur day morning a fire broke out on the shore of Leith in the house possessed by Mr Ferguson as a tavern. The fire was occasioned by the indiscretion of a gentleman leaving a lighted candle when he went to bed

[7] Shocking death.-On Friday night an unfortunate girl about 20 years of age, on coming out of a house in Blair Street, in a state of intoxication, with a bottle in her hand, fell forward and wounded herself with a piece of the bottle. She expired almost instantlyutteringhorrid imprecations. [7] Accident by falling from a cart-On Thursday a carter at Libberton was killed by falling from his cart, and the wheel going over his head.

[7] An explosion of foul airOn Thursday morning, an explosion took place at General Spen's colliery at Rutherglen.

[7] Fall from a window-On Sunday night, a woman, of the name of Neilson, while watering some flowers at the window of her house, Glasgow, unfortunately fell into the street. She expired in a bout three hours.

[7] Parish bank -At a meeting of the Ruthwell parish bank on the 4th ultimo, it appeared that the funds belonging to that be nevolent institution, have risen to upwards of a thousand pounds in the short period of four years, and that the good consequences of providing a place of safe deposit for the savings of the industrious poor, are no longer a matter of mere specuFation.

17] A boy falls from a plank · William Smith, about seven years of age, while amusing himself, on Thursday se'ennight, upon a plank, laid across the Fithie, at Baldo vie, fell into the water and was drowned.

[12] Modern Fanaticism-1 respectable yeoman at Inglebourt, Ha near Totness, had a small freehold of his own, independent of a large farm he rented, and was doing well when becoming a follower of Joan na Southcot, he put such implicit faith in one of her predictions, that in the ensuing year there would be neither earing or harvest, as the world was to be destroyed, th poor fellow thought he would save bis seed wheat, and absolutely let all his land lay idle. When ren day came, he was obliged to par with a portion of his own proper ty to pay the rent of the farm he occupied; he never recovered th blow, but sunk gradually in th world, until obliged to solicit lief from the frigid hand of paro chial charity.

[21] Murderørs convicted-→ Mitchell, the murderer of M Welshman, and Hollings, who de prived Elizabeth Pilcher of life in sinnilar way, about a month before were on Friday tried and convicts at the Old Bailey, and sentenced die on Monday next.

[21] Ferry-boat oversetThursday afternoon, between f and five o'clock, being the grea fair day at the Moss of Balleck the ferry boat at the Balloch, the river Leven, was overset. To boat, though every way calcula to give security to the passeng was contrary to the advice of ferryman, completely overloads there being in it nearly 100 sons, besides several horses; an is supposed some of the horses ing to the great pressure, unavoidably been touched by

In this perius situation the lady had the relution to throw herself out at the ack of the gig, and luckily did ot receive much injury.

OCTOBER.

[5] Accident in a quarry-On he morning of the 26th ult. as ichard Wilkie, one of the men mployed in a quarry at Gilmerton elonging to the Dalkeith district f roads, was wheeling earth along gangway, he lost his balance, nd was precipitated to the bottom [5] Well-timed charity.-There ave been collected £195. 55. 9d. or the widows and families of the oat's crew belonging to Holy Isand, which was upset at Wick on The 23d August last. while emloyed in the herring fishery,

[10] True humanity seasonably xerted-A gentleman from the East Indies, who lately arrived here, presented a lady of this city with a little African Negro boy, about nine or ten years of age, which some time since he humanely preserved from being destroyed by a slave-merchant. It appears that among many slaves which were offered for sale by the captain of a slave-ship, the black infant was one; not being able to procure a purchaser he took the child up by the leg and arm to throw him into the ocean, and, when in the very act, the above

gentleman interposed, and agreed to give some consideration. The boy is very tractable, has a good capacity, and a most retentive memory.

(10) A shocking sight.-A few nights since, at twelve o'clock, a gentleman passing through Little Russel-street, observed an infant lying on the pavement close to a woman drunk.

[12] Fall overboard.-On monday last as the Chance, Donaldson, was leaving the harbour of Montrose for Newcastle, one of the mariners engaged aloft fell into the river and was drowned.

[12] Fatal intoxication.-A ma. son last week fell over the drawbridge at Fort George in a state of intoxication, and was killed.

(19) Emperor of Russia.-The emperor of Russia has sent a benefaction of £1000. to the society of friends of foreigners in distress, of the plan of which his imperial majesty was pleased to approve in his late visit to this country.

(26) Swallowing a nut,-A young women of the name of Harvey, who resided in Avon Street, whilst eating nuts swallowed one unmasticated, which, according to the common term went the wrong way, and caused her considerable pain. Every effort to remove it was tried in vain the parts inflammed, and she died in a few days

(26) Sleeping among plants.— On Thursday night the gardener of a Mr Sherbrook, within about three miles of Layton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, who had frequently had his pinery robbed, determined to sit up and watch; he accordingly posted himself in the greenhouse with a loaded fowling-piece, where it is supposed he fell asleep, and in the morning was found dead on the ground, with all appearance of suffocation, evidently occasioned by the discharge of mephitic gas from the plants during the night.

(26) Death by a spring-gun.At Mitcham, a man was lately shot in a garden by a spring-gun. He was discovered to be an old offender; a great quantity of small shot was found lodged in his legs..

(16) Shocking depravity. Murphy was executed at Lancaster, and buried on Monday se'ennight, and on that same day, his daugh, ter, a girl of 15, was detected stealing shoes, and is committed to take her trial for the offence.

NOVEMBER.

(7) Suffocation-A melancholy circumstance took place yesterday about two o'clock, at a public house in Tottenham-court-road. As a man in perfect health was eating his dinner, a portion of food entered the wind-pipe, and he expired almost instantaneously.

(7) Murderer apprehended.— William Seymour, who is charged with the wilful murder of M. Belsham the cow-keeper at Maldon in Essex, has been apprehended and safely lodged in Chelmesford gaol. (7) Murderer executed.-Monday morning T. Sharpe was executed for the murder of Mrs Dobbins. (9) Marry in haste; repent at leisure.--A young lady, the daughter of a medical gentleman in London, lately eloped with a young ensign, and in ten days after the marriage abandoned her husband, and returned to seek the protection of her parents. Cruelty is the cause alledged for this sudden change from violent affection to disgust.

(9) Caution in viewing wild beasts. Last week, at Warminster, a party who were viewing some wild beasts, underwent a great shock; a man took a little boy in his arms, and unguardedly approached so near the cage of a royal tiger, that the fierce animal dashed out his claws, caught hold of the child, and would have dragged him into the cage, had not the dress,

which was very loose, given way by which the beast lost his hold. DECEMBER.

(5) Apprehension of a robber Joseph King, the robber shot in the face by Miss Broderick's but ler, has been apprehended at Bir mingham. He had applied for admission into the hospital, but h person answering to a description the above robber, he was secured.

(5) Alarming accident.-0 Monday last, a number of people were looking over the battlement of the old bridge, Manchester, and amongst them a woman with child in her arms, which, she care lessly holding it, sprang out of her arms into the river.

(7) Robbers detected.-We can now congratulate our readers on a complete discovery and detection as to the late robberies. Three of the gang are already in custody, and a clue got to the discovery of the B others.

(8) Effect of intoxication.Last week, a lieutenant of the na vy, going to London in one of the Leith smacks, was raised to such a pitch of phrenzy by intoxication, that he rushed out of the cabin, climbed up to the top of the mast, fell upon the deck, and was killed

in a moment.

(8) The friends of humanity will hear, with much satisfaction, that three merchants, in the African slave trading, have been brought from Sierra Leone, in the Ariel sloop of war, and lodged in Winchester goal, in order to their being sent to New South Wales for fourteen years.This is one way to put an end to the slave trade, but it might be an improvement uper their method of punishment, to send such inhuman wretches to situations where they must w voidably taste some of those bitter ingredients they are so fond of 22 ministering to others.
