3.

He was Obedient even to Death it felf,
Phil. ii. 8. So that he underwent that Death
which the Firft Adam had deferved for all
Mankind.

III. In what Senfe are many here faid to be made Righteous by One? Even in the fame Senfe as we are before said to be made Sinners by One.

1. By having Chrift's Righteoufnefs, as we had Adam's Sin imputed to us.

1. No Man can be pronounced Righteous by God, unless he be really fo, Prov. xvii. 15. Ifa. v. 23.

2. But no Man is really Righteous in himself, Ecclef. vii. 20.

3. Hence it is impoffible we fhould be accepted of as Righteous before God, unless we have fome other Righteousness imputed to us, Rom. iv. 6, II.

4.

Hence Chrift was pleafed to be Obedient even to Death for us; that fo by his Obedience imputed to us, we might be accepted of as Righteous.

For,

1. Our Righteousness is plainly afferted to be only in Chrift, 2 Cor. v. 21.

He was made Sin for us.

Quemadmodum oblatus pro peccatis non immerito
peccator factis dicitur. Ambrof.

Our Sins were laid on him, Ifa. liii. 6.
So his Righteoufnefs on us, Phil. iii. 8, 9.
Epb. i. 6.

2. He is exprefly called our Righteousness,
Jer. xxiii. 6. c. xxxiii, 16. 1 Cor. i. 39.

3. He is called our Surety, Heb. vii. 22. who being bound for us, paid in our Stead what the Law required of us.

4 Chrift's whole Obedience was only upon our Account, and for our Sakes, Gal. iv. 4, 5. So that by his Obedience the Law is perfectly fulfilled in us, Rom. viii. 3, 4.

2. We are made Righteous by Christ, as Sinners by Adam inherently.

1. He mortifies our Sins, 1 John iii. 8. A&ts iii: 26. 1 John i. 7, 9.

2. He gives Repentance, Ats v. 31.

3. He fanctifies our whole Natures, and makes us Holy, I Cor. i. 30. 1 Cor. vi. 11. Eph. v. 25, 26, 27.

4. He enables us to do good Works, Job. xv. 45. Tit. ii. 14. Phil. iv. 11, 12, 13.

US E.

1. Thank GOD for Chrift.

2. Put your whole Truft in him, only for Grace as well as Pardon.

3. Let it be your great Care to be in the Number of those who are made Righteous in Chrift in believing in him.

4. Live as becometh fuch righteous Perfons.

1 JOHN

I JOHN iii. 23.

And this is his Commandment, That we should believe on the Name of his Son Jefus Chrift.

HE

TERE we fee the Son of GOD called by Two Names, Jefus and Chrift; the first being the Name of his Perfon, the fecond of his

Office.

I. As to the First, Jefus.

1. Who gave him that Name? The Angel Gabriel before he was born or conceived, Luke i. 26, 31. c. ii. 21.

2. Why was the Son of God called by this Name? Because he was to fave us. The fame Name that was given Joshua by Mofes, Numb. xiii. 16. you, which was afterwards contracted into Y, as Chron. xxiv. 11. and thence in Greek, 'Ines, the Saviour, as Luke ii. 11. Acts xiii. 23. Hypo Tad ircéna owlieg. 'Inour..

This Reason is given, Matt. i. 21. For, 1. He alone procured Salvation for us, Job. iii. 17. Acts iv. 12. And that by dying-for us, Rom. v. 8, 9. 1 Pet. i. 18, 19.

2. He alone conferreth it upon us, Heb. vii. 25. Phil. iii. 20, 21. Acts V. 31.

Hence,

1. Truft on him only for Salvation, 1 Tim.ii. 5. 2. Love and Efteem him above all Things, Matt. x. 37. Phil. iii. 8

,*

3. Reverence and Adore him, Phil. ii. 9, 10. As xix. 13, 15. Heb. i. 6.

4. Rejoyce in him as your Saviour, Luke į. 46, 47. c. ii. 10, 11.

II. He

H. He was called Chrift. This great Thing we must believe. For thefe Things are written that you might believe that Jefus is the Chrift, Job. xx. 31.

For the opening of this; Confider,

1. God from the Beginning promised Mankind a Saviour, or Jefus, Gen. iii. 15.

2. This Promife was often renewed to the Fathers, and the coming of our Saviour foretold by the Prophets.

3. He was ordinarily called the Messiah, n'wo, Dan. ix. 25, 26.

4. Meffiab in Hebrew, is the fame with Chrift in Greek, John i. 41. c. iv. 25.

Thefe Things confidered, we fhall prove, t. That Jefus is the Chrift or Meffiah.

2. Shew, wherefore he was called by that Name.

1. That Jefus is the Chrift, appears, in that all the Prophecies concerning the Messiah was foretold in him.

1. His Birth.

3. His Death and Paffions.
