THE Council will proceed, at the commencement of the session 1851-52, to award three scholarships in the Faculty of Law; one to a student of the first year, one to a student of the second year, and one to a student of the third year, after examination in the following courses of study, respectively:

I. COURSE OF STUDY FOR THE FIRST YEAR'S SCHOLAR

SHIP IN LAW.

Williams' Real Property.-Stephens' Commentaries on the Laws of England, vol. i.—Inquiries in the Science of Law, by James Reddie (second edition, 1847), to the end of the first part, p. 216.

AT the commencement of the session of 1851-52 the Council will proceed to award six scholarships in Medicine; two to students of the first, two to students of the second, and two to students of the third year, after examination in the following courses of study respectively:

1. COURSE OF STUDY FOR FIRST YEAR'S MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP.

The English Language:

Grammar and Composition.

The Greek Language:

Homer-Iliad, books i.-iv.

Xenophon-Anabasis, books i.-iii.

The Latin Language:

Virgil-Eneid, books i.-vi.

Horace-Odes, book i.; Satires, book i.

Sallust-Catiline, and Jugurthine Wars.

Arithmetic:

Vulgar and Decimal, including Fractions and Extraction of the Square Root.

Algebra:

To Simple Equations, inclusive.

Geometry:

First and second books of Euclid.

II. COURSE OF STUDY FOR MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIPS OF THE

SECOND YEAR.

Anatomy and Physiology:

All the subjects of Human Anatomy and Physiology taught in the first year's course of the Faculty.

Chemistry:

Laws of combination and affinity.-Preparation and properties of the principal inorganic and organic bodies.-Composition of animal tissues and products.-Chemical problems of Physiology.

Natural Philosophy:

Principles of Statics and Dynamics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, and Acoustics, Heat, Light, and Electricity, with special reference to Animal Mechanics and the physical phenomena of life.

Botany:

Botanical classification.-Vegetable Physiology and Organography. Special history of medicinal plants.

French or German Languages:

The candidate must show sufficient acquaintance with one or other of these languages to translate an ordinary literary or medical French or German work, and to translate an exercise from English into one or other of those languages.

III. COURSE OF STUDY FOR MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIPS OF THE THIRD YEAR.

Anatomy and Physiology:

In its full extent, as taught in the Faculty.

Practical Chemistry:

The processes of the Pharmacopoeia.-Detection of poisons, and adulterations of drugs.

Materia Medica and Therapeutics:

Natural history, physiological and therapeutical action of medicines.

IV. The details of the courses of study for the special scholarships of the fourth year of the Medical Faculty will be published in the Calendars next year.

ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS.

At the commencement of the session of 1851-52 the Council will proceed to award two scholarships in the School of Engineering; one to a student of the first, and one to a student of the second year, after examination in the following course of study.

The course of study for the first year's Engineering Scholarship is the same with that described in page 105, for the first year's Science Scholarships.

Natural Philosophy:

Principles of Statics and Dynamics.-Hydraulics and Pneumatics.-Laws of Heat and Vaporization.

Chemistry:

Laws of Combination and Affinity.-Preparation and Properties of Inorganic Substances.

Surveying and Engineering:

Descriptive Geometry and projection.-Surveying, levelling, plotting plans and sections.-Uses of instruments in engineering field-work.-Quickness and accuracy in drawing, readiness and facility in practical operations, will be required from candidates.
