THE CENTURION'S SERVANT HEALED.

forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things 47 which I say y? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is 48 like he is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

SECTION 28.-(75) After the sermon, Jesus enters Capernaum, and heals the servant of a certain centurion of his sickness.—MATT. viii. 5-13; LUKE Vii. 1—10. 1Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. And Jesus saith unto him,* I will come and heal him. 3 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: *but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me 1 Lu. vii. 1-5. 2 Mat. viii. 7. 3 Lu. vii. 6, 7. 4 Mat. viii. 8. 5 Lu. vii. 8,9.

St. Matthew makes the centurion in person to beseech Jesus, while St. Luke refers to "the elders," as to messengers sent by the centurion. Both are consistent-for that which is done by the authority of another, is the same as though it were done in person.

When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, 'Verily, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the self-same hour. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, Nain. behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

JOHN SENDS MESSENGERS TO JESUS.

prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 'to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in the same hourhe cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind 2receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 1And when the messengers of John were departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes Mat. xi. 7-30. concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment ? Behold, they that wear soft clothing-they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' *courts. * But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Verily I Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater prophet than John the Baptist: notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. 29 that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 7And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being bap30 tized with the baptism of John. And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the 31 men of this generation? and to what are they like? are like unto children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor 33 drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. The Son of 34 man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! But wisdom is justified of all her children. 35 1Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his 20 mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe 21 unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, It shall be more 22 tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto 23 heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say 24 unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O 25 Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good 26 in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: 27 and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Nain.

And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's 38 house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman 40 this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus

answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say 41 unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on. There was a

certain creditor, which had two debtors: the one owed five 42 hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me, 43 therefore, which of them will love him most?

Simon

answered and said, I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. 44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I 46 came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my 47 feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
