THE WIDOW'S MITE.
157 then doth David in spirit call him Lord ? And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the son of David ? For David himself 'saith in the book of Psalms, 3 by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son ? And no man was able to answer him a word; and the common people heard him gladly, @neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. "Mk. xii. 35,6. 2 Lu. JESUS WARNS THE JEWS. that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand
with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal 41 them. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, 42 and spake of him. Nevertheless among the chief rulers
also many believed on him ; but because of the Pharisees
they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of 43 the synagogue: for they loved the praise of men more
than the praise of God. 44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth 45 not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth 46 me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the
world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in 47 darkness. . And if any man hear my words, and believe
not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, 48 but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth
not my words, hath one that judgeth him : the word that I 49' have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For
I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent
me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and 50 what I should speak. And I know that his commandment
is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. 1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his No. 224.

WOES ON THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES. 159 call no man your father upon the earth : for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters : 10 for one is your master, even Christ. But he that is greatest 11 among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall 12 exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 13 for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men : for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, 14 hypocrites ! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypo- 15 crites ! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, 16 which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing ; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind : for whether 17 is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold ? And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but 18 whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the 19 altar that sanctifieth the gift? Whoso therefore shall 20 swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and 21 by him that dwelleth therein. And he that shall swear by 22 heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! for ye 23 pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, 24 and swallow a camel.

Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and 27 platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe
unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful
outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all 28 uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear right

iniquity. 29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! be
cause ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the 30 sepulchres of the righteous, and say, If we had been in
the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers 31 with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be
witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them 32 which killed the prophets. Fill ve up then the measure of
your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape 34 the damnation of hell ? Wherefore, behold, I send unto
you prophets, and wise men, and scribes : and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye
scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city 35 to city: that upon you may come all the righteous blood
shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel
unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye 36 slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto 37 you, All these things shall come upon this generation. O
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gather
eth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not ! 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say 39 unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say,
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings ? As for these things which ye behold, the days will come in the which, verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives 8 over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 'saying, Master, 10 tell us, when shall these things be ? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world, when all these things shall be fulfilled ? 12 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. But when ye shall hear of wars, and commotions, 16 and rumours of wars; see that ye be not troubled : for all these things must first come to pass, but the end 18is not yet. 19 Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: 20 and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes,* in divers places; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
