OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

23 for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than 24 meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: How much 25 more are ye better than the fowls? And which of 26 taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye

then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye 27 thought for the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to-day in the field, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will

29 he clothe you, O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubt30 ful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31

But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these 32 things shall be added unto you. Fear not, little flock; for

it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35

Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; 36 and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will 38 come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, 39 blessed are those servants. And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his

Then Peter said unto him, parable unto us, or even to all? then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his 43 lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth I say 44 unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth 45 his coming; and shall begin to beat the men-servants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; the 46 lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, 47 and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, 48 and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if 49 it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be bap- 50 tized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell 51 you, Nay; but rather division: for from henceforth there 52 shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, 53 and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the motherin-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise 54 out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when ye see the south wind blow, ye 55 say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. Ye hypo- 56

crites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; 57 but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

Yea, and

why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? 58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee 59 into prison. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till

thou hast paid the very last mite.

SECTION 64.-(170) At the same time Jesus is told of the fate of the Galilæans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices: by whose example, and also by the parable of the fig-tree, planted in a vineyard, he warns the survivors to repent, or they likewise should perish. LUKE Xiii. 1–9.

answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilæans were sinners above all the Galilæans, because they suffered 3 such things? I tell you, Nay: but except ye repent, ye 4 shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom

the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they 5 were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem ? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

6

He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit 7 thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree, and find none: cut it down; why cum8 bereth it the ground? And he answering, said unto him,

Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and 9 dung it: and if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and im- 13

And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indigna- 14 tion, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath-day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath-day. The Lord then answered 15

him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, 16 being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? And when he had said these things, all his 17 adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

It is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man 19 took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
