THE CELEBRATION.

BEFORE all things, this we must be sure of especially, that this Supper be in such wise done and ministered, as our Lord and Saviour did, and commanded to be done, as His holy Apostles used it, and the good fathers of the primitive Church frequented it. For (as that worthy man saith) he is unworthy of the Lord, that otherwise doth celebrate that mystery, than it was delivered by Him. Neither can he be devout, that otherwise doth presume than it was given by the Author.-Homily concerning the Sacrament.

THE CELEBRATION.

The Order of the Administration of the Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion.

So many as intend to be partakers of the holy Communion shall signify their names to the Curate, at least some time the day before.

And if any of those be an open and notorious evil liver, or have done any wrong to his neighbours by word or deed, so that the Congregation be thereby offended; the Curate, having knowledge thereof, shall call him and advertise him, that in any wise he presume not to come to the Lord's Table,1 until he hath openly declared him

1 "If it be said, S. Paul calls the Holy Board a Table. I answer, no, not simply a table, but the Lord's Table (1 Cor. x, 21). And I have elsewhere proved, that by this expression we are to understand an altar; for wherever else it is used in Scripture, that is clearly the meaning of it. As the reader may be satisfied, with perusing the four places where we meet with this word in the Old Testament; viz. Ezek. xli, 22, xliv, 16; and Mal. i, 7, 12.
