Age call'd, at length, his active mind to reft, With honour fated, and with cares oppreft; To letter'd eafe retir'd and honeft mirth, To rural grandeur and domeftic worth: Delighted ftill to pleafe mankind, or mend, The patriot's fire yet sparkled in the friend. Calm Confcience then, his former life furvey'd, And recollected toils endear'd the shade, Till Nature call'd him to the general doom, And Virtue's forrow dignified his tomb.

This monument is raised To the memory of
OLIVER GOLDSMITH,
Poet, Natural Philofopher, and Hiftorian;
Who left no fpecies of writing untouched
Unadorned by his pen, Whether to move laughter Or draw tears.
He was a powerful master Over the affections,
Though at the fame time a gentle tyrant; Of a genius at once fublime, lively, and Equal to every fubje&t : His expreffion at once noble, Pure, and delicate.
His memory will laft
As long as fociety retains affection, Friendship is not void of honour, And reading wants not her admirers. He was born in the kingdom of Ireland, At Ferns in the province of Leinster,
Where Pallas had set her name 29 Nov. 1731.
He was educated at Dublin,
And died in London, 4th April, 1774.

HENRY THRALE, Who fo well difcharged his feveral duties, Whether civil, or domeftic,
That many wished him a longer life So well the duties of his religion, That he seemed to know before hand, how Short a life he should enjoy! Plain, honeft, and always confiftent, He difplayed nothing in his conduct Either diffembled, or ftudied.
In Parliament he faithfully confulted the Welfare of his KING and COUNTRY. A fpirited contemner of the clamorous multitude At home, amidst the numberless engagements. Of business, he cultivated letters,
He affifted his friends in diftrefs,
By his advice, his intereft, and his fortune: Amongst his affociates, companions, and guests, He poffeffed that agreeable fweetnefs of manners By which he won all hearts,
And that happy freedom of fpeech By which he flattered no one
He was born, 1722. He died 1781.5"
