Her gifts defpis'd, Corruption blush'd and fled,
And Fame pursued him where Conviction led.

Age call'd, at length, his active mind to reft,
With honour fated, and with cares oppreft;
To letter'd eafe retir'd and honeft mirth,
To rural grandeur and domeftic worth:
Delighted ftill to pleafe mankind, or mend,
The patriot's fire yet sparkled in the friend.
Calm Confcience then, his former life furvey'd,
And recollected toils endear'd the shade,
Till Nature call'd him to the general doom,
And Virtue's forrow dignified his tomb.

TRANSLATION

Here lie the remains of

HENRY THRALE,
Who fo well difcharged his feveral duties,
Whether civil, or domeftic,

That many wished him a longer life
So well the duties of his religion,
That he seemed to know before hand, how
Short a life he should enjoy!
Plain, honeft, and always confiftent,
He difplayed nothing in his conduct
Either diffembled, or ftudied.

In Parliament he faithfully confulted the
Welfare of his KING and COUNTRY.
A fpirited contemner of the clamorous multitude
At home, amidst the numberless engagements.
Of business, he cultivated letters,

He affifted his friends in diftrefs,

By his advice, his intereft, and his fortune: Amongst his affociates, companions, and guests, He poffeffed that agreeable fweetnefs of manners By which he won all hearts,

And that happy freedom of fpeech
By which he flattered no one

And pleased all.

He was born, 1722. He died 1781.5"
