DIFFERENCE IN TIME IN THE PRINCIPAL CITIES OF THE WORLD. Variation of time depends on Longitude; East of Greenwich every degree causes the clock to be 4 minutes earlier, every degree West 4 minutes later. SPAIN.-Madrid time-14 minutes later than Greenwich. CONTINENTAL TIME. The times stated in the above diagram are strictly correct according to longitudinal difference, but it may be well to explain that the Railway Companies on the Continent largely adopt either MidEuropean or East European time. The following shows more precisely what this means: BELGIUM AND HOLLAND.-Greenwich (West European) time. FRANCE.-Paris time-9 minutes 2016 seconds earlier than Greenwich. AUSTRIA, DENMARK, GERMANY, ITALY, SWITZERLAND, NORWAY, SWEDEN.-Mid-European time - hour earlier than Greenwich. Italian time is reckoned from 1 to 24 o'clock. GREECE.Athens time-1 hour 35 minutes earlier than Greenwich. BULGARIA, ROUMANIA AND EASTERN TURKEY.-East European time-2 hours earlier than Greenwich. RUSSIA. St. Petersburg time-2 hours 1 minute earlier than Greenwich. Moscow time-2 hours 30 minutes earlier. ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS. These Maps are fully described in the BRITISH ALMANAC for 1901. Subjoined is an Index to the sheets of the -in. Survey of England and Wales. Indices for Scotland and Ireland are given on subsequent pages. The price per sheet is 1s. for England and Wales, 1s. 9d. for Scotland, and 1s. for Ireland. In the 1-in. maps a number of symbols are used: these are explained below, as well as the manner in which roads, railways, tramways, &c., are indicated. They only appear on the 6-in. and 1.in. maps and are shown at intervals of too ft. up to 1,000 ft. The 6-in. maps of the mountainous parts of Scotland are not contoured, but contours sketched by water level are shown at 100 ft. and 250 ft. intervals on the r-in. maps. ; In Ireland only a few counties in the north are contoured. |
