Women attend, in many cases, the same lectures, and in all University exams. take the same examination papers as undergraduates; but their successes are published in separate class lists, and as they are not "members of the University," nor recognised for any but examination purposes, they are awarded no degrees. They number at Cambridge about 285; at Oxford, about 150, exclusive of "Home Students.'

For other Women's Colleges see page 150.

OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE DEGREES.

A degree was originally a licence from the University to teach later it was granted to those whose acquirements reached the standard considered necessary as a qualification for a

teacher.

In order to obtain a degree at Oxford or Cambridge, it is necessary to become either a member of one of the Colleges or Halls, or a non-collegiate student. Entrance examinations vary as widely at different colleges as do fees and all-round expenses, and the best scholarships (100 per annum) rarely if ever are sufficient to live on. For the B.A. degree three years' residence is necessary (see below), and as few colleges have adequate accommodation within their walls, some part of the time must be passed in licensed lodging houses.

[ocr errors]

The University arranges for the delivery of public lectures by professors, etc., but the college authorities superintend generally the work of their respective members, advise what lectures to attend, provide private tuition, and periodically examine informally, to ascertain what progress is being made. As a result of these test examinations at Oxford "Collections; at Cambridge "Mays") scholarships may be awarded or revoked, but they have no direct concern with the getting of a degree. The University has almost unlimited disciplinary powers; but minor offences are, as a rule, punished by college officials, by Fining, "Gating" (i.e., confinement within college precincts), or, in worse cases, Expulsion,

temporary or permanent.

OXFORD B.A.

No candidate may take his B.A. degree (fees: to University, £7 1os., to College, various) until he has resided twelve terms. There are four terms a year, Michaelmas, Hilary, Easter and Trinity, but the two latter are continuous, and being usually kept by four weeks' residence in each (instead of eight as the Michaelmas and Hilary), form for all practical purposes one term ("Summer Term"). Three examinations must also be passed:

I. RESPONSIONS ("Smalls")-usually taken before coming into residence-Latin and Greek translations or grammar, and simple mathematics.

II. MODERATIONS ("Mods.") (a) Honours-at

the end of eighteen months-pure scholarship (translations, etc.)-accurate and critical knowledge of certain authors and classical subjects, (b) Pass-at any time after the end of first year. Specialized knowledge of a few classical works, with logic or mathematics (e.g., Euclid III-IV.). Both a and b include Divinity ("Divvers "—the text and subject-matter of the gospels and one other book of the Bible. [Some Honourmen take certain "preliminary "examinations in lieu of moderations.]

III. FINALS. (a) Honours. Taken at the end of third or fourth year. There are eight distinct schools Literae Humaniores (ie. Ancient History and Philosophy), Mathematics, Natural Science, Law, Modern History, Theology, Oriental Languages, English Language and Literature. The standard in all these, which must be attained for high honours, is extremely severe.

(b) Pass. Three groups "have to be taken. each consisting of a very small portion of one of the above Honour schools, which must, however, be mastered thoroughly.

No candidate may enter for any Honour school (under ordinary circumstances) more than once; but entries for pass exams. are unlimited. Only one Final Honour school is necessary for a degree, but a fair number of men every year read two.

CAMBRIDGE B.A.

No person may supplicate for the degree of B.A. unless he shall have resided for nine terms of at least fifty-six days each (not necessarily consecutive).

Any candidate must have passed the Previous Exam. ("Little Go"), including set classical books, mathematics, divinity and English, and extra subjects if seeking honours.

For an honours degree, he must have taken a Tripos within three years from the date of matriculation for a pass, the "General" and one "Special."

There are ten TRIPOSES; Mathematics, Classics, Natural, Mechanical and Moral Sciences: History, Theology, Law, Oriental and Mediæval Languages. The first five may be taken in the fifth term in the following year a further exam. in the same subject (Part II.), or any other Tripos

may be taken, but it is quite optional. The latter five may not be taken before the eighth term, and have no second part. The agitation of last year failed to abolish the order of merit (Wranglers, Senior Optimes, etc.) in which Mathematical candidates are placed, in favour of the class-grouping (I., II.. III., IV.) which is now the rule in all other Triposes.

Those who fail in any Tripos may be awarded the ordinary ("poll") degree: but the usual way of obtaining the latter is by taking, in or after the third term, the General (which is a more advanced "Little Go," including, e.g., Juvenal's Satires and Hydrostatics), and also a Special examination on some limited portion of one of the subjects of the Triposes.

Masters of Arts whose names are on the "books" at Oxford, "boards" at Cambridge (i.e., who continue to pay annual dues to their colleges), have many privileges, including a vote for Parliamentary representation.

OTHER Degrees.

B.D., M.B., etc. The superior degrees (except Musical) are only conferred on those already having the B.A. For the Baccalaureate there is an examination, and for the Doctorate a thesis must be presented.

For information on University Musical Degrees, see page 186.

Research Degrees are of very modern date, and the conditions are too lengthy to be here set down.

Full information will be found in the "Student's Handbook " (2s. 6d. Oxf. Univ. Press), and "Compendium of Regulations" (6d. Camb. Univ. Press).
