THE intention of the following Sketches of the Human Heart, is, to lead Christians to use the Word of God as their Looking-glass, in which they may see their own moral likeness or character, in order that being brought, by the grace of God, to the knowledge of their spiritual wants, they may seek from God through Christ, to have them supplied,-that discerning the corruptions and imperfections of their own hearts and lives, they may strive, with God's grace, to be purified from them,-and that having before their eyes the features of the Christian character as they are delineated and set forth in the Scriptures, they may study (with the assistance of God's Holy Spirit) to be conformed unto the same :—in short, that believing in Jesus Christ, as their Saviour, they may have redemption through His blood," and that " beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord," they may be "changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."+

"Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass; for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."+
