In this year there will be five Eclipses; three of the SUN, and two of the MOON: I. A PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN, March 16th, visible to the extreme northeastern portion of Asia.

II. A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE MOON, March 30th, 31st, visible to North and South America, portions of Europe and Africa, and intervening Atlantic Ocean. At Boston,

III.-A PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN, April 15th, visible to the southern part of Australia, and the Great Southern Ocean.

IV. A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE MOON, September 24th, visible to the western part of North America, to Asia, Australia, eastern portion of Africa, and Pacific Ocean.

V. A PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN, October 8th, visible to the northern part of North America, to Greenland, and Eastern Europe. At Boston, and New England generally, the eclipse will be quite unimportant, occurring between the hours of 11 and 12 in the morning.

The longitudes of the following places are counted west from Greenwich, while the differences of time refer to Boston. (+) added to, (—) subtracted from, Boston time.

DEFINITIONS. [Continued from last year.]

PENUMBRA. [L. pæne, almost, and umbra, a shade.] That portion of space which in an eclipse is partly, but not entirely, deprived of light.

In the figure, let S be the sun, and M the moon; then it is obvious that, since luminous rays proceed from every part of the sun's disk, there will be no part of the shadow in which the light will be totally intercepted, except that included within the rays which proceed from the extreme edges of the sun and moon, A B C and B DC; the other part of the shadow, namely, from C to H, or the penumbra, being only partially obscured.

In painting, the term penumbra is used to designate the boundary of shade and light, where the one blends with the other. - From Worcester's Quarto Dictionary of the English Language.
