139.

Dark and cheerless is the morn,
Lord, if it be reft of Thee;
Joyless is the day's return,

Till Thy mercies' beams we see;
Till they pour their gladd'ning light
Thro' the darkness of our night.

Visit, then, these souls of Thine,
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
Fill us, Lord, with light divine;
Scatter all our unbelief;

More and more Thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day.

Father, glory be to Thee,
Glory to the blessed Son,
Glory to the Spirit be,
Glory to the Three in One,
As it was, is now, shall be
Unto all eternity.

As call'd and sent of Thee, O Lord,
So come the preachers of Thy word,
In one unbroken, hallow'd line,
That all the glory may be Thine.

By Them Thou spread'st Thy cheering light
Where darkly brooded error's night,
And guid'st our feet to realms of peace
Where life, and pleasures never cease.

Lord, from Thy word, the Church's law,
Still may they heavenly wisdom draw,
And to the shepherds of Thy fold
Thy pure, and perfect truth unfold.

And grant Thy servants, Lord, to hear
Their voice, with holy care and fear;
From earthly thoughts our spirits raise,
To profit by Thy gifts of grace.

SIXTH SUNDAY.

140.

JERUSALEM! our happy home!
O name for ever dear!

When shall our labours have an end,
Thy glories all appear?

When shall our eyes Thy heavenly walls
And gates of pearl behold;
Thy bulwarks with salvation strong,
And streets of shining gold?

There happier bowers than Eden's bloom, Nor sin, nor sorrow know.

Blest seats thro' rude and stormy scenes
We onward press to you.

Apostles, martyrs, prophets there
Around the Savior stand:
May all we love in Christ below,
Be with that glorious band.

Jerusalem! our happy home!
Our souls still long for Thee;
Our sorrows and our pains shall end,
When we Thy joys shall see.

141.

BROUGHT to the font with holy care,
And wash'd from nature's shame,
New born in Christ, we thenceforth bear
The Christian's sacred name.

Blest priviledge! but all in vain.
Our new and heavenly birth,
If we the truth of God profane,
And cleave to things of earth.

Lord, we would keep that blest estate,
Our threefold vow fulfill;
Submissive at Thine altar wait,
And cleanse our souls from ill.

Then daily, Lord, Thy grace impart
To aid the grace first given,
That love abiding in the heart,
May lift our souls to heaven.

142.

O YE your Savior's Name who bear,
Who know the truth His words declare,
Are bought with His most precious blood,
Buried in His baptismal flood.

Bear not the name of Christ alone,
If
ye would reach His glorious throne;
Oh! never from His laws depart,
But Christians be in life and heart.

He who would reign with Christ above,
Must here in faith and patient love
First tread that rough and thorny road
Which Christ before him meekly trod.

He who his Savior rightly knows,
And on his way devoutly goes,
When life is o'er shall sweetly rest,
And be with Christ for ever blest.

SEVENTH SUNDAY.

143.

BESET with snares on every hand,
In life's uncertain path I stand:
Savior divine, send forth Thy light,
To guide my doubtful footsteps right.

Engage this roving treach'rous heart,
Great God! to choose the better part,
To scorn the trifles of a day,

For joys, that none can take away.

Before me place the glorious crown, Inspire and make my soul Thine own, Bind to Thy Cross my wand'ring will, Each act with holy purpose fill.

If Thou, my Savior, still art nigh,
Cheerful I live, and peaceful die;
Secure, when mortal comforts flee,
To find ten thousand worlds in Thee.

144.

O LORD, Thy heavenly grace impart,
And fix my frail inconstant heart;
Henceforth my chief desire shall be
To dedicate myself to Thee.

Whate'er pursuits my mind employ,
One thought shall fill my soul with joy ;
That silent, secret, thought shall be
That all my hopes are fix'd on Thee.

Thy glorious Eye pervadeth space,
Thou'rt present, Lord, in every place,
And wheresoe'er my lot may be,
Still shall my spirit cleave to Thee.

145.

O God of holiness and grace,

How blest are they, and only they,
Who love Thy sacred steps to trace,
And strive Thy precepts to obey.

Thy law is written in their hearts,
Thy service is their best employ ;
The Holy Ghost their strength imparts,
And fills their souls with peace and joy.
