What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto

you ? and they covenanted with him for thirty 16 pieces of silver. And from that time he fought op

portunity to betray him. 17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread,

the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him,

Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the 18 pallover (F)? And he said, Go into the city to such

a man, and say unto him (8),- The master faith, My

time is at hand, I will keep the paffover at thy 19 house with my disciples. And the disciples did as

Jesus had appointed them, and they made ready the 20 passover. Now when the even was come, he fat 21 down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he

said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall 22 betray me, And they were exceeding sorrowful,

and began every one of them to say unto him, 23 Lord, is it I? And he answered and said (h), He

that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the fame

24 shall betray me. The Son of man goeth (i) as it is

written of him: but wo unto that man by whom the

Son of man is betrayed: it had been good for that 25 man, if he had not been born. Then Judas,

which betrayed him, answered, and said, Mafter,

is it I? He said unto him (k), Thou hast said. 26 And as they were eating, Jefus took bread, and

blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, 27 and said, Take, eat (l); this is my body. And he

took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to 28 them, saying, Drink ye all of it: For this is my

blood of the new testament, which is shed for 29 many for the remiffion of fins. But I say unto you,

I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you

in

These words were {poken to Judas apart. He then said in the hearing of all, What thou doesl do quickly, John xiii. 27. intimating that he was prepared for the suffering, which he knew Judas was contriving to bring upon him. Observe on one hand, the divine foreknowledge of Christ in discovering the designs of the heart; and on the other hand the deceitfulness of fin, which drives men to their destruction, notwithstanding the plainest warning.

(1). This is my body and my blood is a figurative expression, and must be understood to mean the representation, or fign, of them, in the same sense as the lamb is called the Passover, Exod xii. 11. The bread could not be Christ's natural body, whilst he was alive ; for, it was his body that performed the action of breaking and give ing the bread: nor could the wine in the cup be his blood; for, that was still flowing in his veins. They who hold the doctrine of Transubstantiation must therefore confess, that no change was made in the substance of the bread or the wine when the words were pronounced by our Saviour. And how can we suppose the words to be more powerful from the mouth of a priest, than when spoken by our blessed Lord himself? See Mark xiv. 22. Note.

(m) When my Father shall have established the kingdom of the gospel by my resurrection ; after which I will eat and drink with you as I used to do. He accordingly did so, forty days, until his ascension, Luke xxii, 16, 18.

faith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with 41 me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not

And behold, one of them which were with Jesus, · stretched out his hand,

and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high 52 priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus

unto him, put up again thy sword into his place :

for all they that take the sword, shall perish with 53 the sword (u). Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray

fr) It is now too late to exhort you any more to watch and pray, the time of trial and danger being actually at hand.

(s) It seems to have been the custom of the Jews for friends to kiss each other at their meeting. Our Saviour rebukers Simon a Pharisee, who was entertaining him at his house, for having negleEted that civility. Luke vii. 45.

(!) Our Saviour puts this question to Judas, not that he desired a reply; but to frike the traitor with the deeper conviction of his guilt.

(u) Resistance will but tend to your own destruction, If I were disposed to save my life, I could have all the powers of beaven to

shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? 55 In that same hour faid Jesus to the multitudes, Are

ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staves

was done (*), that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook

him and fled. 57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus, led him

him afar off, unto the high-priest's palace, and went in, and fat with the servants, to see the end. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the coun

cil, fought false witness against Jesus to put him to 60 death, But found none : yea, though many false

witnesses çame, yet found they none. At the last 61 came two false witnesses, And faid, This fellow

said, I am able to destroy the (y) temple of God, 62 and to build it in three days. And the high-priest

arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? 63 what is it which these witness against thee? But

Jesus held his peace. And the high-priest answered and said unto him, I (2) adjure thee by the living God that thou tell us, whether thou be the Christ the

affift me; but I willingly fubmit to the appointment of God, and so ought you likewise.
