tle while is the light with you: walk while ye have the light, left darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth. 36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things fpake Jefus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

37 But though he had done fo many miracles before 38 them, yet they believed not on him: That the faying of Efaias the prophet might be fulfilled which he fpake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Efaias 40 faid again (m), He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not fee with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be convert41 ed, and I fhould heal them. Thefe things faid Efaias, when he faw his glory, and fpake of him.

Nevertheless, among the chief rulers alfo, many believed on him; but because of the Pharifees they did not confess him, left they should be put out of the 43 fynagogue. For they loved the praise of men more than the praife of God.

Jefus cried, and said, He that believeth on me, be45 lieveth not on me (n), but on him that fent me. And

m) Ifaiah (vi, 10. liii. 1.) foretold that the Jews would reject the gofpel: but his prophecy could not be the caufe or occafion of their unbelief. The meaning of the phrafe is no more than thus was fulfilled. See Matt. i. 22.

The Jews were accuftomed to afcribe to the immediate act of God every event, even though it happened according to the common courfe of things. Thus God is faid to harden Pharaoh's heart. Ex. x. 12. though it is plain his heart was hardened by his own wilfulnefs and obftinacy; for he is faid to hardened his own heart, Exod. viii. 15, 32. In like manner the infidelity of the Jews was owing to their own perverfenefs: and though God did indeed for wife parpofes permit that infidelity to prevail, he was not at all the occafion of it. I am come a light into the world, that whofoever believeth on me, fhould not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not (o): for I came not to judge the world, but to fave the world. 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have 49 spoken, the fame fhall judge him in the last day (p). For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which fent me, he gave me a commandment, what I 50 fhould fay, and what I fhould fpeak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting (9): whatfoever I fpeak therefore, even as the Father faid unto me, so I speak.

CHA P. XIII.

NOW before the feaft of the paffover, when Jefus knew that his hour was come, that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them un2 to the end (a). And fupper being ended, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Si3 mon's fon, to betray him.) Jefus knowing that the Fa

(0) The end of my prefent coming, is not to condemn, but to fave. My fecond coming will be to execute judgment.

(6) Though Jefus knew that the Father would, on his afcenfion, reftore him to that high power and authority which he had with him from the beginning, yet he condefcended to wash his difciples feet; thereby fetting us a moft powerful example of humility and kindness to each other. See verfe 14.

needeth not, fave to wash his feet, but is clean every 11 whit (e): and ye are clean, but not all. For he knew

who fhould betray him; therefore faid he, Ye are 12 not all clean. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was fet down again, he faid unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Mafter, and Lord: and ye fay well; for 14 fo I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have wash

ed your feet, ye alfo ought to wash one another's 15 feet. For I have given you an example, that ye 16 fhould do as I have done to you. Verily, verily I fay The fervant is not greater than his Lord, neither he that is fent, greater than he that sent him (f). 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. 1.8 I fpeak not of you all; I know whom I have chofen: but that the fcripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against 19 me (g). Now I tell you before it come, that when it is

20 come to pafs, ye may believe that I am he. Verily, verily I fay unto you, He that receiveth whomfoever I fend, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, re21 ceiveth him that fent me. When Jefus had thus faid, he was troubled in fpirit, and teftified (b), and faid, Verily, verily I fay unto you, that one of you fhall 22 betray me. Then the difciples looked one on another, 23 doubting of whom he spake. Now there was leaning

on Jefus' bofom (i), one of his difciples whom Jefus 24 loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to (k) him,

that he fhould ask who it fhould be of whom he 25 fpake. He then lying on Jesus' breast, faith unto him, 26 Lord, who is it? Jefus answered, He it is to whom

I fhall give a fop, when I have dipped it (/). And when he had dipped the fop, he gave it to Judas If27 cariot, the fon of Simon. And after the fop, Satan

entered into him (m). Then faid Jefus unto him, 28 That thou doeft, do quickly (n). Now no man at the 29 table knew for what intent he fpake this unto him. For fome of them thought, becaufe Judas had the bag, that Jefus had faid unto him, Buy thofe things that we have need of against the feast: or that he should give 30 fomething to the poor. He then having received the fop, went immediately out and it was night.

Therefore when he was out, Jefus faid, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in 32 him. If God be glorified in him, God fhall alfo glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify

(h) Teftified, that is, he spoke openly and plainly.

(i) The Roman cuftom at meals (and it was adopted by the Jews) was to lie on couches, fupporting themfelves on the left elbow, fo that the head of one was against the bofom of the person who was above him. See Luke vii. 38. Note.

Simon Peter faid unto him, Lord, whither goeft thou? Jefus anfwered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou fhalt follow me after37 wards (p). Peter faid unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy 38 fake (9). Jefus anfwered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my fake? Verily, verily I fay unto thee, The cock fhall not crow, till thou haft denied me thrice.

LET not your heart be troubled: ye believe in 2 God, believe also in me. In my Father's houfe are many mansions (a); if it were not fo, I would have 3 told you: I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may 4 be alfo. You will indeed What I faid to different sense;

(e) I have but a very fhort time to be with you. with for my prefence, but you cannot go with me. the Jews, Chap. vii. 35. I now fay to you, but in a for by keeping my commandments you may follow me. (p) See Chap. xxi. 18, 19.
