INTRODUCTORY.

IN this compilation, the object has been to make the headings proper clues to the quotations, and I believe, though it seems to be asserting a good deal to say so much, that nothing in the same form or on so extensive a scale has been before attempted.

The headings are : I st. Such as can be clearly gathered from the passages quoted,

as for instance : GREATNESS (fallen) [778].

now lies he there,
And none so poor to do him reverence.

Antony. Julius Cæsar, Act iii. Sc. 2. 2ndly. Such as the public have long decided upon, as for

instance : BOXES (at theatre) (736). A beggarly account of empty boxes,

Romeo. Romeo and Juliet, Act v. Sc. I. 3rdly. Those which in default of any ruling I have myself

selected, as for instance : CHAFFLESS (950).
