PREFACE.

THE present is one of a series of special Guides issued for the convenience of such as prefer, for a time, limiting their attention to a particular locality. It has been prepared in reference to the new work of general topography, "MENZIES' TOURIST'S POCKET GUIDE FOR SCOTLAND," as well as the subordinate volumes, "MENZIES' POCKET GUIDE TO EDINBURGH AND ITS ENVIRONS," and MENZIES' POCKET GUIDE TO THE TROSACHS, LOCH KATRINE, LOCH LOMOND," &c., which it in fact follows up and illustrates. The general volume certainly embraces a Sketch of all the objects of interest in Glasgow, in one continuous route; but differs essentially in the nature and arrangement of its information from the present Pocket Volume, which is adapted for those who may feel inclined to spend some time in inquiring into the institutions of the Queen of the Scottish West, and for Tourists who may be desirous of passing as rapidly over the municipal ground, as over other parts of Scotland. Complete in themselves, and expressly adapted to their several purposes, these works are therefore calculated mutually to illustrate one another.

We feel bound to state, that in no section of our descriptive series, have we met with a more prolific theme than "Glasgow." Whether we regard the marvels of its rise and progress-the interesting historical traits that attend them-its commercial greatness—its manufacturing industry-or the stupendous social 'relations that develope
