Myrias Ægypto ceffit bis feptima pingui. 66 To the above Lines (which are unfinished, and can therefore be only offered as a fragment), in the Doctor's manufcript, are prefixed the words, Geographia Metrica." As we are referred, in the first of the verses, to Templeman, for having furnished the numerical computations that are the subject of them, his work has been accordingly confulted, the title of which is, "A new Survey of the Globe," and which profeties to give an accurate mensuration of all the empires, kingdoms, and other divifions thereof, in the fquare miles that they refpectively contain. On comparison of the several numbers in thefe verfes with thofe fet down by Templeman, it ap pears that nearly half of them are precifely the fame; the reft are not quite lo exactly done.- -For the convenience of the Reader it has been thought right to subjoin each number, as it ftands in Templeman's work, to that in Dr. Johnson's verfes which refers to it. : a In this first article that is verfified, there is an accurate conformity in Dr. Johnfon's number to Templeman's; who fets down the fquare miles of Palestine at 7,600. The fquare miles of Ægypt are, in Templeman, 148,700. Myrias adfcifcit fibi nonagefima feptem Parthenoped. e Novies vult tellus mille Sicana. f Papa fuo regit imperio ter millia quinque. c The whole Turkish empire, in Templeman, is computed at 960,057 fquare miles. d In the four following articles, the numbers, in Templeman and in Johnson's verfes, are alike.-We find, accordingly, the Morea, in Templeman, to be fet down at 7,220 fquare milee.— Arabia, at 700,000.-Perfia, at 800,000.-and Naples, at 22,000. Sicily, in Templeman, is put down at 9,400. f The pope's dominions, at 14,868. g Tuscany, at 6,640. h Genoa in Templeman, as in Johnson likewife, is fet down at 2,400. i Lucca, at 286. Ruffia, Ruffia, myriadas ter denas adde trecentis: 1 Sardiniam cum fexcentis fex millia complent. Et quadragenis decades quinque addit Ierne3, The Ruffian empire, in the 29th plate of Templeman, is fet down at 3,303,485 fquare miles. 1 Sardinia, in Templeman, as likewise in Johnson, 6,600. m The habitable world, in Templeman, is computed, in square miles, at 30,666,806. ■ Afia, at 10,257,487. o Africa, at 8,506,208. P Europe, at 2,749.349. q The British dominions, at 105,634. England, as likewife in Johnson's expreffion of the number, at 49,450. Ireland, at 27,457. Quingentis quadragenis focialis adauget t Millia Belga novem. Ter fex centurias Hollandia' jactat opima Undecimum Cambert vult feptem millibus addi. t In the three remaining inftances, which make the whole that Dr. Johnfon appears to have rendered into Latin verse, we find the numbers exactly agreeing with thofe of Templeman; who makes the fquare miles of the United Provinces, 9540-of the province of Hol land, 1800-and of Wales, 7011.
