is in heaven; which we ask as disciples of Jesus Christ. Amen.

CONCLUDING PRAYER.

ETERNAL and all see

ing God, we thy creatures sink into nothing before thy supreme majesty; we feel our weakness; we acknowledge our folly; we repeatedly bewail our sins; thee only would we adore with awful veneration; thee would we thank with fervent zeal; to thy power we humbly submit ; of thy goodness we devoutly implore protection; on thy wisdom we firmly and cheerfully rely. Whenever we address thee, O Father, if our prayers are unwise, wilt thou pity us;

if they are presumptuous, wilt thou pardon us; if acceptable to thee, grant them, all powerful God; and as we now express our submission to thy decrees, adore thy providence, and bless thy dispensations, so, in that future state, to which we reverently hope thy goodness will raise us, may we continue praising, venerating, worshipping thee, more and more, through worlds without number, and ages without end. Amen.

THE Lord bless us and

keep us; the Lord make his face shine upon us, and be gracious unto us; the Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, now and evermore. Amen.

END OF SERVICE FOR FAST DAYS.

FORMS OF PRAYER

TO BE USED AT SEA.

This Service may commence with the following Psalm; after which the Person officiating may use such parts of the common Morning or Evening Prayer, as he shall judge proper.

PSALM XCIII.

THE Lord is King, and hath put on glorious apparel; the Lord hath clothed himself with majesty, and girded himself with strength.

He hath made the world so sure that it cannot be moved.

Ever since the world began, hath thy throne been established; thou art from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their

waves.

The waves of the sea are mighty, and rage hor

ribly; but yet the Lord, who dwelleth on high, is mightier.

Thy testimonies, O Lord, are very sure; holiness becometh thine house for

ever.

After the Collect for the Day may be used the following Prayer.

ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; who hast compassed the waters with bounds, until day and night come to an end; be pleased to receive into thine almighty and most gracious protec

tion, the persons of us thy servants, who now call upon thy name from the bosom of the mighty deep. Borne on the surface of a changing element, and exposed to the vicissitudes of the inconstant skies, may we always feel ourselves in the presence and merciful care of that infinite and holy God, who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with a span. Preserve us, we pray thee, from the dangers of the sea; from shipwreck; from fire; from the wrath of the tempest; from the violence of enemies; and grant that we may arrive at our desired haven, in safety, health, and peace, and with a thankful remembrance of thy rich and manifold mercies. But we do more especially pray, O Lord our God, that if thou shouldst see fit to bring us into peril and misfortune, we may bear thy whole will with perfect submission, and surrender ourselves in every event to thine absolute and all wise disposal. Whether we are in danger or at rest, in sickness or health, in life or death, let us be thine, O Lord, and wholly thine.

Hear us in behalf of our country, and grant that it may constantly prosper under thy care, and be defended with thy favourable kindness as with a shield. Bless our absent friends, wherever they may be; preserve them from evil; and in thy great mercy permit us to see them again, and rejoice in their society and welfare.

We thank thee, that thou hast thus far preserved us ; we thank thee for this opportunity of calling upon thy name; we commend ourselves and our interests to thy holy keeping; and ascribe unto thee all honour and glory, dominion and praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this.

LORD, our God, who madest heaven, and earth, and sea, and all that therein is, and who keepest thy promise for ever; mercifully hear the prayers of thy servants; deliver us from the dangers of the seas; protect seas; protect and prosper us in the way we go, and bring us to our haven and to our friends in peace; but above all things grant that we may always submit to

thy will and pleasure, and obey thy most holy law, and so pass the waves of this changing and troublesome world, that we may finally come to the land of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then may be read other Prayers of the Morning or Evening Service, or else the Benediction may immediately follow.

and save us, in the name of our blessed Saviour, thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

THOU, O Lord, who

stillest the raging of the sea, hear, hear us, and save us that we perish not.

O God, whose Son Jesus Christ did save his disciples ready to perish in a storm; hear us, and save us, we beseech thee.

Lord be merciful to us sinners, and save us for thy mercies' sake.

PRAYER IN STORMS AT SEA.

MOST glorious and gracious Lord God, who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things below; look down we beseech thee, and hear us, calling out of the depth of misery; and out of the jaws of this death, which is now ready to swallow us up. Save, Lord, or else we perish. The living, the living shall praise thee. O send thy word of command to rebuke the raging winds, and the roaring sea; that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve thee, and to glorify thy name all the days of our life. Hear, Lord,

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

They are carried up to the heaven, and down again to the deep; their soul melteth away because of the trouble.

So when they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, he delivereth them out of their distress.

For he maketh the storm to cease, so that the waves are still.

Then are they glad, because they are at rest; and so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be.

O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness; and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

That they would exalt him also in the congregation of the people; and praise him in the assembly of the elders!

COLLECT OF THANKSGIVING.

O MOST mighty and gracious good God, thy mercy is over all thy works, but in special manner hath been extended towards us, whom thou hast

so powerfully and wonderfully defended. Thou hast showed us terrible things, and wonders in the deep, that we might see how powerful and gracious a God thou art; how able and ready to help those who trust in thee. Thou hast showed us how both winds and seas obey thy command; that we may learn even from them hereafter to obey thy voice, and to do thy will. We therefore bless and glorify thy name, for this thy mercy, in saving us when we were ready to perish. And we beseech thee, make us as truly sensible now of thy mercy, as we were then of the danger; and give us hearts always ready to express our thankfulness, not only by words, but also by our lives, in being more obedient to thy holy commandments. Continue, we beseech thee, this thy goodness to us; that we, whom thou hast saved, may serve thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
