LONDON. THE CATTLE MARKET, Which was formerly situated in Smithfield, a large open space near Newgate Street. It was removed from thence to the Copenhagen Fields, between Islington and Camden Town, and was formally opened by the late Prince Consort in 1854. The cost of this market was over £400,000. THE NEW METROPOLITAN MEAT MARKET Has been erected on the site of the old Smithfield market. It is 625 feet in length, 240 feet in width, and 30 feet in height. It has underground communication with the above mentioned. BILLINGSGATE, A fish market, lies on the north bank of the Thames, a little below London Bridge. This is the great receptacle for all fish that is sent to London, and it is here consigned to salesmen, who distribute it not only to the various shops of London, but of England generally. LEADENHALL MARKET Is chiefly a depôt for meat and poultry received from the provinces. THE COLUMBIA MARKET, Built by the Baroness Burdett-Coutts, is a wholesale fish market. It has lately been made over to the Corporation of the City of London. COVENT GARDEN MARKET Is the greatest vegetable and fruit market in the metropolis. It is situated to the north of the Strand, with which it is connected by Southampton Street. It was rebuilt in 1829-30, and is a handsome building of quadrangular form.
