quire among themselves which of them it was ' that should do this thing.' Luke does not record the result of this enquiry ; or any accusation of Judas in particular ; but he records that this enquiry led them to ' strife among them,

which of them should be accounted the great' eft.' Jesus first humbles them, by preaching humility, and then exalts them by a very flatterring promise, ch. xxii, v.28 to 30. ' Ye are " they which have continued with me in my ' temptations, and I appoint unto you a king

dom, as my Father hath appointed unto me. • That ye may eat and drink at my table, in my ' kingdom, and fit on thrones, judging the

twelve tribes of Israel. This promise, in consequence of the strife among them ; is contradictory to the account given by Matthew and Mark *, and how are we to account for its being inade to Judas? He, certainly, was one of the twelve. And if, as it is said in Johnch. vi, v. 64. • Jesus knew from the beginning who they were . that believed not, and who should betray him;'

this promise is the more extraordinary ; and is as unaccountable as the conduct of Judas, who sold the reversion for thirty pieces of silver. St. John (who before ; ch. xiii, v. 12, had said—and supper being ended, the Devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son to betray him) records, that Jesus ended this contention by an example of humility ; washing their feet himself, and commenting upon it for their instruction. He then goes on--- When Jesus had • thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testi"fied and faid-Verily verily I say unto you o that one of you shall betray me. Then

the disciples looked one on another, doubting

of whom he spake. Now there was leaning on - Jesus' bosom one of his disciples whom Je' sus loved (John himself). Simon Peter there.fore beckoned to him that he should ask who it · should be of whom he spoke. He (John) then

is it ? Jesus answered, he it is to whom I shall * give a sop when I have dipped it : and when • he had dipped the fop, he gave it to Judas If'cariot the son of Simon. And after the Sop Satan

entered into him. Then said Jesus unto hiin, that thou dost, do quickly. Now no man at the <table knew for what intent he fpake this unto

him. For some of them thought because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, buy those things that we have need of against the

feast :

poor : He then having received the sop, went ' immediately out and it was night. There is something unintelligible to me in this transaction; it seems as if the Devil's entrance into Judas, was in consequence of his having received the fop from the hand of Jesus : and how are we to account for the direction given by the latter to Judas? If the act, which he then premeditated, was evil ; we should rather have expected difsuasives. This however was a prophecy which at all events must be fulfilled ; and how far Judas was culpable, will be considered when we come to the most interesting part of his story*. St. Matthew xxvi. 30 records--that after the supper they went out into the Mount of Olives, (it is not clear from Matthew's account, whether Judas had or had not left them

at this time.) Then faith Jesus unto them, all " ye shall be offended because of me this night : " for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and " the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

But after I am risen again, I will go before you into "Galilee.' (When this promise was fulfilled, or whether it was at all, is a matter of doubt at beft ,)

Peter answered and said unto him, though all

men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I ' never be offended, Jesus said unto him, Verily I • say unto thee, that this night before the cock

crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Peter said

' unto him, though I should die with thee, yet I will I not deny thee, likewise also said all the • disciples. (By Matthew's account, we may still suppose Judas was one of them.) Mark gives nearly, the same account, the chief difference is— before the cock crow twice, thou shalt

deny me thrice.' Luke records this discourse (ch. xxii) in a very different manner, and that it was inade before they went to the Mount of Olives—. And the Lord said-Simon, Simon,

behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he 'may fift you as wheat : but I have prayed for

thee that thy faith fail not; and when thou art

converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he " said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with

thee both into prison, and to death. And he « said, I tell thee Peter, the cock shall not crow o this dry, before thou shalt thrive deny that thou

knowest me.' And here we find this fingular and extraordinary addition—' And he said unto

them, When I sent you without purse, and 'scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And

they said, nothing. Then said he unto then,

But now he that hath a purse, let him take it ? and likewise his fcrip; and be that hath no ' fevord, let him fell his garment and buy one : . (This injunction, in cald weither, seems to 'imply a very urgent necessity.) For I say " unto you, that this that is written, must be accomplished in me - And he was reckoned

them, it is enough. And he came out, and went, as ' he was wont, to the Mount of Olives : and his • disciples alío followed him. In this record of St. Luke's it is difficult to understand the 31st and 32d verses, Jesus tells Peter, that Satan desired to have him, but that he had prayed for him that his faith might not fail; and that, when he was converted, he should strengthen the brethren. We shall find hereafter, that Satan not only defired to have him, but that he strove hard for him; and so far prevailed, notwithstanding the prayer, that he brought him to lie, to curse, and. to swear. By this it is evident that Peter's faith had failed; but did his conversion take place, when he went out and wept bitterly? It is still more difficult to account for the directions given (v. 36) to his disciples of He that hath no sword, ' let him sell his garment and buy one. They reply. ' Lord behold here are two swords ;' and he rejoined- it is enough.' It doth not appear that they purchased swords, in compliance with his direction; and their whole history furnilhes but one instance of a sword, or any other weapon, being used by them even defensively; that happened the saine evening, when he was apprehended in the garden.
