HYMN CLXIV. L. M.
A Sacramental Hymn.

I.

NGELS, attend your Sov'reign slain,
Feel, if you can, his mighty pain;
For mortal breasts can never know
The full proportion of his woe.

II.

The broken law its claims pursues,
Nor 'bates one tittle of its dues;
Base man torments his mortal part,
And hellish lions rend his heart.

III.

See gath'ring tempests round him rise,
Whilst vengeance on the victim flies;
Devils ne'er felt a storm so great,
On Tophet's flaming regions beat.

IV.

O'erwhelm'd he sinks, his heart gives

way,

And Justice triumphs o'er its prey;
But in his death Salvation's born,
So clouds fly off, and yield to morn.

V.

Whilst thus the slaughter'd Lamb we view,
Our grateful powers his praise renew:
Around his board we'll sit and sing,
'Till heav'n's bright day begins to spring.

SEE!!

[blocks in formation]

NEE! GOD unsheaths his flaming sword Last guardian of his injur'd word, And lest vile men his wrath disown, It murmurs vengeful round his throne.

II.

Hail, tempests, storms, his banner rear,
Whilst trembling nations hear and fear;
But when his justice aims a blow,
He strikes th' affrighted nations thro'.

III.

Famine, and plagues, and fire, and death
Stream awful from his angry breath;
He shakes the earth, the mountains reel,
Nor rocks their old foundations feel.

IV.

Billows of earth, resistless waves,
At once prepare ten thousand graves;
It's heavy sides fly light as air,
And shrieking crouds feel wild despair.

It's pond'rous jaws drink human gore,
But still insatiate call for more ;
Tyrants and slaves here huddled, meet
A footstool for JEHOVAH's feet.

VI.

See! lofty buildings strew the ground,
And fire relentless raves around;
Proud palaces in sparks ascend,
And thick'ning shades the prey defend.

VII.

Let Europe hear, let nations learn,
And quick from daring crimes return;
When heaven its vengeance flings abroad,
Who can withstand this dreadful GOD?

VIII.

Tremble my soul, and stand in awe,
For Justice guards his righteous law;
Fly to the shelter of his grace,
There safety dwells in his embrace.

HYMN CLXVI. S. M.

The Soul returning to God as its rest.

RE

I.

ETURN, degen'rate soul, return
To GOD thy native rest;

Before his flames of vengeance burn,
And kindle on thy breast.

II.

The mighty GOD will scorn repay,
To all his stubborn foes;

Who from his soft embraces stray,
And seek a base repose.

[ocr errors]

Their rest shall break; their joys shall fly
Like vapours soon dispers'd;
When all the hopes beneath the sky,
Like airy bubbles burst.

IV.

But, hark! the GoD of love appears

To chear the souls opprest,

"Come, children, dry your flowing tears, "And lean upon my breast.

V.

"Myself will be your endless prop, "Your screen from hell and sin; My grace unweari'd bears you up, "Till heav'nly joys begin"

66

VI.

Hark! unbelief; I scorn thy lies,
Nor yield to dire alarms;

Whilst threat'ning sorrows cloud the skies,
There's safety in his arms.

HYMN CLXVII. C. M.

The Saint's Victory over the World.

I.

EARTH's eager slaves, with keen desire,

Devour the serpent's food;

Their passions sunk in sensual mire,
Despise immortal good.

11.

(Sin, and the world, with wily arts,
Nail down their souls to sense;
Inglorious aims possess their hearts,
And drive salvation thence.)

III.

But grace refines the heav'n-born soul,
And bears it up to GoD,

To search for joys beyond the pole,
And try th' æthereal road.

IV.

He scorns life's short and hasty toys,
Nor begs the world for bliss;
Born of his GOD, the spacious skies,
And CHRIST, and heaven are his.

V.

Pleasures, nor cares, nor glitt'ring wealth,
Nor Fame's delusive sound;
Shall take his cautious soul by stealth,
The captive of the ground.

VI.

His faith the heavenly world explores,
And views the realms of light:
He pants for everlasting stores,
Far from these shades of night.

VII.

My God, I wou'd be born of thee,
And this blest vict'ry win;
I quit each mortal hope to see
Celestial joys begin.

HYMN CLXVIII. C. M.

The same.

I.

EHOLD the world o'ercome,

And shout the Conqu'ror's fame;

Heaven shall receive him joyful home,
And own his honour'd name.
