Stay, thou insulted Spirit, stay, Sinners, why reject your God - Saviour, visit thy plantation Saviour, canst thou love a traitor
To God the universal King
Thy ways, O Lord with wise design Thro' all the various shifting scene The mighty frame of glorious grace The heavens invite mine eye True 'tis a steep and thorny road The Lord! how fearful is his name 'Tis not for vict'ry, Lord, we pray The city gates are open'd wide The midnight shadows flee away There is a fountain fill'd with blood 'Tis a point I long to know
The Lord will happiness divine
Thus far God hath led me on my The wondering nations have beheld Thou only Sov'reign of my heart Thy life I read, my dearest Lord Tho' foes and fears beset the way To thee the first, the perfect fair To thee, my God, my days are known The spacious firmament on high - The Lord my pasture shall prepare The billows swell, the winds are high 'Tis past-the dreadful stormy night Thou only source of true delight
The Lord proclaims his grace abroad Tho' cloudy skies, and northern blast The Spirit breathes upon the word The Saviour hides his face
This tyrant sin usurps my heart 'Tis pure delight without alloy
Vital spark of heav'nly flame
Who dares attempt th' Eternal name When first the God of boundless grace With tears of anguish I lament What jarring natures dwell within What wisdom, majesty and grace What shall the dying sinner do When the Eternal bows the skies What is our God, or what his name
When the fierce north wind with his airy
Where-e'er my flutt'ring passions rove What heav'nly Man, or lovely God - When shall thy lovely face be seen
When darkness long has veil'd my mind 90 What various hind'rances we meet With heavenly power, O Lord defend While on the melancholy way What jarring principles divide When all thy mercies, O my God When Moses wav'd his mystic rod
When on the cross my Lord I see When the sun, with cheerful beams Welcome, welcome, dear Redeemer When Jesus first at heaven's command 222
Ye dying sons of men Yonder Ye messengers of Christ
amazing sight!--I see
Ye humble souls, complain no more Ye proud! your empty glories boast Ye weary souls, the Saviour cries Ye dying sons of men
Ye worlds of light, that roll so near
HYMN I. L. M.
The Creator and Creatures.
OD is a name my soul adores,
Th' ALMIGHTY THREE, th' ETERNAL ONE;
Nature and grace, with all their pow'rs, Confess the Infinite Unknown.
From thy great Self thy Being springs; Thou art thy own Original,
Made up of uncreated things,
And self-sufficience bears them all.
Thy voice produc'd the seas and spheres, Bid the waves roar, and planets shine: But nothing like thyself appears,
Through all these spacious works of thine.
Still restless nature dies and
From change to change the creatures run; Thy Being no succession knows, And all thy vast designs are one.
A glance of thine runs through the globes, Rules the bright world, and moves their frame;
Broad sheets of light compose thy robes, Thy guards are form'd of living flame.
Thrones and dominions round thee fall, And worship in submissive forms; Thy presence shakes this lower ball, This little dwelling-place of worms.
How shall affrighted mortals dare To sing thy glory or thy grace, Beneath thy feet we lie so far, And see bu shadows of thy face?
Who can behold the blazing light? Who can approach consuming flame? None but thy wisdom knows thy might; None but thy word can speak thy name.
HYMN II. C. M.
Worshipping with Fear,
HO dares attempt th' Eternal name With notes of mortal sound?
Dangers and glories guard the theme, And spread despair around.
Destruction waits t'obey his frown, And heav'n attends his smile:
