JAMES, CLERKENWELL; the first stone of which was "The first stone of this Church was laid on the 16th day of December 1788; when this plate was depofited therein by the Rev. William Sellon, Minifter of this parish; John Aris, John Howard, Churchwardens; the Rev. Sir George Booth, bart. (and 63 other names) the acting Trustees appointed by Act of Parliament for building the New Church; William Blackborow, Efq. Treasurer; Abraham Rhodes, Nicholas Lacy Fry, and William Cook, Veftry Clerks; James Carr, Architect and Surveyor to the Trustees.This edifice ftands on part of the fite of the late Church of St. James, Clerkenwell, which was formerly part of the Priory, called Ecclefia Beata Maria de Fonte Clericorum, for Nuns of the Order of St. Benedict, founded in the year 1100 upon 14 acres of land given by Jordan Briffet to Robert his chaplain, to build a religious houfe upon. The Priory was fuppreffed 26 Henry VIII, and, after paffing through various hands, the Church, by purchase, became vested, 'on the 2d of June 1656, in Trustees for the use of the parishioners of the faid parish.” ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
