into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

4 But when the morning was now come, Jefus ftood on the fhore but the disciples knew not that it was Jefus.

5 Then Jefus faith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

6 And he faid unto them, Caft the net on the right fide of the fhip, and ye thall find. They caft therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

7 Therefore that difciple whom Jefus loved, faith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fishers coat unto him, (for he was naked) and did caft himself into the fea.

8 And the other disciples came in a little fhip (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits) dragging the net with fishes.

9 As foon then as they were come to land, they faw a fire of coals

the Lake, but that night caught nothing. Very early in the morning they faw a Man standing on the Shore, who indeed was fefus, tho they did not know him at first view; who ask'd thein (as if he wanted fomething to eat) whether they had caught any Fith: to which they anfwer'd, No. Jefus then bid them throw their Nets on the right fide of the Ship, where he faid they would find fome Fith. They immediatly follow'd his Directions, tho they knew not yet that it was Jefus, and on a fudden inclos'd a vaft number of Fishes, fo that they were not able to pull their Nets out of the Water. John, at the fight of this wonderful Succefs, told Peter, that undoubtedly that Stranger to whom they were fo much beholden for it, was Jefus their Mafter. Peter then throwing on his upper Garment, leap'd into the Sea, haftning with a pious Zeal to be with him before the Ship could poffibly land him, which was about two hundred Cubits off; the reft making to the Shore in the Veffel, and dragging their Nets after them. When they were landed, they faw upon the Shore fome live Coals by, and a little Cccc

10 Jefus faith unto them, Ering of the fish which ye have. now caught.

I Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three and for all there were fo many, yet was not the net broken.

12 Jefus faith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durft ask him, who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

13 Jefus then cometh and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

14 This is now the third time that Jefus fhewed himself to his difciples, after that he was rifen from the dead.

15 So when they had dined, Jefus faith to Simon Peter, Simon Jon of Jonas, loveft thou me more than these? He faith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He faith unto him, Feed my lambs.

Fifh broiling upon them, with a piece of Bread by, as if Jefus had prepar'd it only for himfelf, who then bid them reach out fome of the Fifth they had caught.

Peter then return'd to the Veffel to help them draw up their Net, which was fill'd with 153 large Fishes, and yet was not in the leaft broke. The Difciples having told out their Fishes, Jefus invited them to partake of the Fish he had already broil'd; nor durft any of them ask him who he was, being well affur'd he muft be Jefus, tho his Countenance was a little alter'd. But he taking up the Bread, break it, and divided it among them, as he alfo did the Fifh. In. this manner Jefus appear'd a third time to feveral of his Difciples after his Re

furrection.. After their Repaft, Jefus ask'd Peter, whether he fov'd him more than the rest of his Difciples. Peter told him, he had a fincere Love for him, and that he muft needs know it. Then faid Jefus, Feed my Lambs, whom I will commit to thy

care.

16 He faith to him again the fecond time, Simon fon of Jonas, loveft thou me? He faith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knoweft that I love thee. He faith unto him, Feed my fheep.

17 He faith unto him the third time, Simon, fon of Jonas, loveft thou me? Peter was grieved, because he faid unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? and he faid unto him, Lord, thou knoweft all things, thou knoweft that I love thee. Jefus faith unto him, Feed my sheep.

18 Verily verily I fay unto thee, When thou waft young, thou girdedft thy felf, and walkedft whither thou wouldeft: but when thou shalt be old, thou fhalt firetch forth thy hands, and another fhall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldeft not.

care. Jefus ask'd him a fecond time the fame Queftion; and having received the fame anfwer from Peter, he repeated the fame words, Feed my Sheep. Having ask'd again a third time the fame Quellion, Peter grieving to be fo often interrogated concerning the fame thing, of which he thought Jefus could not be ignorant, replied, that fince nothing was hid from him, it was impoffible but he must know how much he lov'd him. Jefus faid a third time to him, Feed my Sheep; that by thrice repeating the fame Queftion, and thrice receiving this public Teftimony from him of his Love for his Master, he might atone for his former Denial of him thrice fucceflively; and by having fo great Authority openly confer'd upon him, he might have a folemn affurance that Jefus had forgiven him. He then told him, that while he continued in his Youth and Vigor he should gird himself, and.go whither he pleas'd; but in his declining Age he fhould stretch out bis Hands, be bound, and led whither he would by no means defire to go. In which Words Fefus fignified by what fort of Death Peter fhould confirm the truth of the Gof pel; then ftepping forward, he bid Peter follow him, by which fign alfo he intimated to him that his Death fhould be like to that of his Mafter.

CHAP. XXI. 20 Then Peter turning a bout, feeth the disciple whom Jefus loved, following; which alfo leaned on his breaft at upper, and faid, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

21 Peter feeing him, faith to Jefus, Lord, and what fall this man do?

22 Jefus faith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.

23 Then went this faying abroad among the brethren, that that difciple should not die yet Jefus faid not unto him, He fhall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

24 This is the difciple which teftifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his teftimony is

into a mountain where Jefus had appointed them.

17 And when they faw him, they worshipped him: but fome doubted.

Peter immediatly followed, as he was bid: but looking behind him, he faw Fohn coming alfo; whereupon he ask'd him whether that Difciple alfo was to go along with them. Fefus anfwer'd, If I will have John tarry till I come, what is that to thee? at prefent, do thou follow me. Now this faying of Jefus being but in part understood by the Difciples, there was a rumor fpread abroad that fo fhould never die. However Jefus did not fay he fhould be exempted from the general Neceffity of dying, but only thofe words which we just now mention'd This is the fame Apoftle who has recorded this faying, as alfo many other Difcour fes of Frfus, together with forne of the moft remarkable Paffages of his Life; nor is there any doubt of the truth of his Hiftory, as having bin all along a Man of unfpotted Integrity.

Afterwards, the eleven Apoftles went to a certain Mountain in Galilee, where Fefus had appointed to meet them. At his approach they all bow'd down and worship'd him, not excepting him who before had doubted of his Refurrection.

Jefus then coming nearer to them, thus befpake them: I have now receiv'd Power from my Father to do whatever I please both in Heaven and on Earth; and you I fend as my Meffengers throout the World to gain Difciples over to my Doctrin, whom you are to admit into my Church by the Rite of Baptifm, fo that hereafter they may be, and alfo be efteem'd, the Difciples, not only of my Father, who under the old Covenant reveal'd his Will to the Jews, but of the Son alfo, whofe Doctrin you are to spread among all Nations; and likewife of the Holy Ghoft, whom I will fend to you, and by whofe Affiftance you fhall teach others what you have learn'd from me, without any danger of falling into Error. For you shall make a tender of the fame Gofpel-Terms to all Men which you have received from me, and I for my part will be prefent with you, and all that shall receive my Gospel, until the confummation of all things.

After this Jefus appear'd again to 500 Difciples at once, who all reported what they had feen during the time they furviv'd his Refurrection.

Afterwards he was feen by James alfo, who was call'd the Brother of our Lord, and was the firft Bishop of the Church at Jerufalem; afterwards he frequently
