THE RIGHT HONOURABLE LORD CAIRNS,

Lord High Chancellor of England,

&c. &c. &c.

MY LORD,

The constitution has prescribed that as Lord High Chancellor you shall advise our beloved Sovereign upon her legal and constitutional duty in reference to the revolutionary proposals now before the House of Commons. Your profound knowledge of the law, your loyal adherence to the constitution, your faithful attachment to the Church assure us that your advice to the Queen will be strictly accordant with the laws and constitutional settlements of these kingdoms. I have therefore ventured to inscribe to you this humble attempt to induce my fellowcountrymen to shield their Queen from insult, and to prevent the possibility of conflict between different branches of the Legislature.

I have the honour to be,
My Lord,

Your most obedient humble servant,

ST. ANDREW's, WAKEFIELD,

May 21, 1868.

W. R. BOWDITCH.
