PREFACE.

In closing our First Volume, we may be permitted to congratulate our readers and ourselves on the accomplishment of much, which, at the commencement of the year, formed matter only of promise and intention. Whilst glancing at the several numbers, we are impressed with the most sincere gratitude to those esteemed Correspondents who, amidst many laborious and pressing engagements, have found opportunity to enrich our pages with sound learning, and have enabled us to give permanency to thoughts too precious in themselves, and too much adapted for general usefulness to be willingly lost. Indebted for our present fair position in the literary field to their kindness, we desire thus publicly to make them our most grateful acknowledgments, regretting only that we may not append their respected names.

Without attempting to institute a detailed comparison with other Periodicals of the denomination, so well entitled, on various grounds, to public support, we may confidently affirm, that no Magazine of the price contains so large an amount of the deeper theological investigations, combined with so much that is acceptable and useful to the general reader, as this.

Our sincere thanks are also due to those numerous correspondents, of another class, whose spontaneous and very encouraging expressions of approval have imparted confidence as we proceeded in our arduous enterprise. It will be our ambition to show ourselves worthy of the commendation thus kindly accorded, by endeavouring to make the coming volume an improvement upon its
