Hereas Our Trufty and Well-beloved, Richard Smith, of our City of London, Bookfeller, has humbly reprefented unto Us, that he has, with great Labour and Expence, prepared for the Prefs, a New Edition of the Sermons, and other Works, written in English, by the Right Reverend Father in God, Dr. William Beveridge, Bishop of St. Asaph, Deceased; and has therefore humbly befought Us to grant him Our Royal Privilege and Licence, for the fole Printing and Publishing thereof, for the Term of Fourteen Years: We being willing to give all due Encouragement to Works of this Nature, tending to the Advancement of Piety and Learning, are graciously pleas'd to condescend to his Requeft: And do therefore, by these Presents, grant him the faid Richard Smith, his Executors, Adminiftrators and Affigns, Oar Royal Licence for the fole Printing and Publishing the English Works of the faid late Bishop of St. Afaph, for the Term of Fourteen Years, from the Date here. of; ftrictly forbidding all our Subjects, within our Kingdoms and Dominions, to reprint the fame, either in whole or in part; or to import, buy, vend, utter, or diftributé any Copies thereof, reprinted beyond the Seas, during the aforefaid Term of Fourteen Years, without the Confent and Approbation of the faid Richard Smith, his Heirs, Executors and Affigns, under his or their Hands and Seals firft had and obtained, as they will answer the contrary at their Perils. Whereof the Mafter, Wardens, and Company of Stationers, are to take Notice, that the fame may be entred in their Regifter, and that due Obedience be rendred thereunto. Given at Our Court at Kenfington, the 5th Day of June, 1708. in the Seventh Year of Our Reign.

ESUS being about thirty Years of Age, (S. Luk. iii. 23.) or twenty nine Years, ten Months, (το τειακοτὸ ἔτος + Ενσάρκο γενήσεως, τετέςι και Αἰγυπλίας Αθυρ δωδεκάτη πρὸ ἓξ εἰδῶν Νοεμβρίων και Ελληνας, Δία η', &c. Epiphan. He came to be baptized, not because He wanted it, for He had no Sin; but,

1. To fanctify Baptifm to us. Atque ita non ille neceffitatem habuit abluendi, fed per illum in aquis ablutionis noftra erat fanctificanda purgatio. Hilar.

And fo He was circumcifed, S. Luk. ii. 21.

And fo instituted Baptifm inftead of Circumcifion; as afterwards, the Lord's-Supper for the Pallover, S. Matt. xxvi. 26. and xxviii. 19. Act. xxii. 16.

2. Because He was by this Means to be initiated into His Office, Ne homines gravarentur ad bap tifmum Domini venire, cum non graveretur Dominus venire ad baptifmum fervi. See S. Auguft. Enchirid. ad Laureat. 49. De mirab. facr. Scriptura, 1. 3. c. 5. & in Pfal. xc. Tom. 8. p. 696.

John forbad Him, S. Matt. iii. 14. But Jefus faid, He must not look at the Worthiness of the Perfon, but at the Command of GOD, v. 15.

John came between the Law and the Gospel, S. Joh. i. 25. And he notified our Saviour to the People, v. 29, 30. and particularly, in relation to the Holy Ghoft's Defcent upon Him at His Baptifm, v. 33.

At which Baptifm, we may obferve, how all the Perfons of the Bleffed Trinity manifefted their efpecial Prefence. Voce Pater, Natus corpore, Fla

I. The Son is baptized. For, He was baptized, is not only to declare Him to be the well-beloved Son, v. 17. but we are told also, that it was Jefus that came from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him, v. 13. that ordered it to be fo done, v. 15. and that was baptized, and went up Straightway out of the Water, v. 16.
