NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS.

THE Publishers have pleasure in issuing to the SUBSCRIBERS to the FOREIGN THEOLOGICAL LIBRARY, Two Volumes so intrinsically valuable as those of Lange and Dorner.

The reason of the publication of the second portion of Dorner's Work first, is explained fully by the Prefatory Note; and Messrs Clark will have ready for the second issue for 1861, the First Volume of the First Part of Dorner, and Volume Second of Lange; or, failing the latter, either another Volume of Dorner, or Volume First of Dr Hengstenberg's New Commentary on St John's Gospel.

May the Publishers request an early remittance of Subscriptions for 1861, by those gentlemen who have not yet done so.

May 1861.

Just published, in Two Volumes demy 8vo, price 21s.,

INTRODUCTION TO THE PENTATEUCH;

AN INQUIRY,

CRITICAL AND DOCTRINAL,

INTO THE

GENUINENESS, AUTHORITY, AND DESIGN OF THE
MOSAIC WRITINGS.

BY THE

REV. DONALD MACDONALD, MA,

AUTHOR OF CREATION AND THE FALL."

From the "Witness," May 8, 1861.

"Mr Macdonald, while he has thrown the defence that was called for in the present state of the infidel argument, around the Pentateuch, has given a higher than an apologetic character to his work, by his ample and admirable treatment of the true place and functions of the Pentateuch in the Revelation of God to man, as the first and germinating root of that Tree of Life whose leaves were for the healing of the nations. We should consider it an essential service rendered to our students of theology, to drill them through such a work. It has high qualifications as a text-book for examination in the Pentateuch. Its minute and careful study would both arm the young divine to guard this part of Revelation, and would introduce him with reverence into its sanctuary."

From the "Christian Spectator."

"Mr Macdonald's massive volumes form the most important contribution made of late years to biblical criticism by the Scottish press. It is a work of solid architecture, reminding you, in its solemn tone and broad-based masonry of induction, of an Egyptian pyramid. The subject was one which could be handled successfully only by a grave, infinitely painstaking, rabbinical mind, exactly such as that of Mr Macdonald; and we ought to be very thankful to him, or to anybody else, who thinks it worth while to analyse the biblical theories of our time in the crucible of a learned intelligence, heated by the fire of a fervent piety. We commend his most excellent and laborious treatise to those who are asking for an intelligible digest of the present state of the Mosaic controversy. There can be no doubt that Mr Macdonald will take a very high rank among British theologians."

From the "Daily Review."

.

."The various topics are discussed by Mr Macdonald in an extremely thorough, conscientious and creditable manner. The temper in which controverted questions are dealt with is throughout candid and manly. While the author is distinct and decided in his theological views (and these are unmistakeably orthodox according to the doctrines of the Scottish Churches), we have not observed a single expression of which a reasonable opponent could complain. At the same time, the mass of materials which has to be dealt with is always vigorously taken in hand, and often disposed of with much success. The whole work deserves high credit, and will, we believe, be of the greatest use to clergymen and students."
