His excellency the most noble the governor-general has received a dispatch from the right hon. lord Hobart, one of his majesty's principal secretaries of state, tosignify to the governor-general his majesty's most gracious permission to accept, and to wear the honor conferred upon the governor-general by the grand seignor, in the order of the crescent of the first rank; together with his majesty's commands to the governor-general, to notify the same gracious permission to major-general Baird, and to the other officers who have received similar honors from the Ottoman court.

His majesty has also approved of the governor-general having worn the insignia of the said order, and of his excellency having authorized the officers abovementioned to wear the respective

badges transmitted to them by the grand seignor, until his majesty's pleasure should be made known to the governor-general.
