"These make their chains of daisies,
And some forge chains of gold,
And those there are whom prison chains
From light and hope withhold:

“And children, you may daily,
By lowly deeds of love,

With tender care and secret prayer
And sunlight from above,

"Weave chains that ne'er are riven,
Entwining heart with heart,
And linking earth and heaven,
Which seem so far apart.”

And then he cross'd the church-yard,
And I thought he look'd and sigh'd
As on the Sunday after

Our sweet Miss Alice died:

Miss Alice, whom the village call'd
The fairest of its flowers,

But who now lies still beneath the hill,
And will never more be ours.

And as I weave my chain, and take
The path by which he went,
With every link I think and think,
And wonder what he meant.

H

THE BOY AND THE ROSE.

OW different the teaching of a Christian school to that which even the best educated heathen children receive in their own homes!

Mr. Sargent, who wrote for us

an

account of New Year's Day in Tinnevelly, relates the following story :

On one occasion a Brahmin gentleman brought his little son with him, who, while the father was conversing with me, went out into the verandah and plucked a rose. When he came into the room again, I said, "Tell me who made that flower in your hand." He looked puzzled, and when I repeated the question, he replied, with some hesitation, "The gardener." I was greatly surprised at this and said, "The gardener took the slip from another rose bush and put it in the ground, and watered it day by day. But you do not mean to say that he made the green branches to grow out of the side, and produced those beautiful petals and painted them red?"

The poor boy looked bewildered, and his father was apparently distressed; so to recover my good opinion of the boy, the father said, "Now tell the gentleman what you have been learning." So the little fellow folded his arms, as if standing before his teacher to repeat his lesson, and gave first the Tamil and then the English of the following three sentences :"I must not tell lies.

"I must do no injury to any one. "I must be respectful to all."

After repeating these, memory seemed to fail him. So the father observed, "Sir, my son knew a great many such moral sentences, but a friend of mine from Madras, some time ago, hearing him repeat them, observed that so strict a morality was too severe for so little a boy!"

Now this native gentleman was an excellent English scholar, held a high appointment, and was acknowledged to be one of the very best men in the district. But he does not seem, as day by day he walked hand in hand with his little boy, ever to have talked with him about the great God above, and the

things around us which He has made. Not a little child in any of our schools but, if asked the question who made the rose, would at once answer, "God made the rose, for He made all things." And then, as to other great matters, our duty to God and our duty to one another, that also is taught us in youngest years from the Bible, which is able to make us wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus; so that I may indeed say, "Blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear."
