That I may be tender of my Neighbour's Reputation, and never expofe it to rash Cenfures, nor diminish it by the Relation of his real Infirmities.

That I may guard my Heart from secretly repining at his Profperity, or triumphing in his Calamity.

That I may fet a Watch upon the Door of my Lips; that I may speak no Evil concerning him, nor utter any Words of Detraction.

That it may quiet and appeafe the furous Boiling of Anger in my Mind, by making me patient and meek under all Provocations, by difpofing me to forgive Offences, and never to return any injurious Treatment.

That it may conquer worldly Sorrow, which worketh Death, by a comfortable Expectation of future Happiness.

That it may expel Malice, by doing Good; that it may ftrengthen my Weaknefs, by Fortitude; cure my Defpair, by Hope; by Liftleffnefs, by fpiritual Exercifes; and reftrain the Wanderings of my Mind towards unlawful Things, by making me fteadfast and unmoveable in the Work of the Lord.

nence, that I may know how to abound, and how to want.

That my Appetites may be kept under ftrict Government, fince the indulging of them by our firft Parents brought Death into the World.

That they may always obferve their due Bounds, by adminiftering to the Neceffities of Life, and never fupport and encourage Luxury, which is boundless and infinite, which brings forth Scurrility, and Immodefty, which depreffes the Soul, and renders it unapt for fpiritual Enjoy

ments.

Make me fo mindful of that ftrict Ac count I must give of all my Actions, at the dreadful Tribunal Seat, that it may mortify all Inclinations and Temptations to finful Pleafures.

And ftir me up to Zeal and Diligence in performing all thofe Things which are acceptable in thy Sight, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

may be added, with regard to the Receiving the Holy Sacrament.

IN order to attain thefe bleffed Ends, O Lord, I approach thy holy Table, that I

may

may grow in Grace, and may be enabled to imitate the fuffering Virtues of the crucified Jefus.

Grant therefore, moft merciful God, that the receiving the Symbols of his Body and Blood, which I am now about to partake of, may, by the Grace and Efficacy of his Spirit, conform me to his Divine Image, and make me steadfast in ferving thee, till thou takeft me finally to enjoy thee, through Jesus Christ my Bleffed Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Some Short Prayers, proper to be used for the enforcing our Holy Refolutions, and for the Affiftance of God's Grace, to enable us to perform them.

I. O LORD Jefu! I give thee my Body, my Soul, my Subftance, my Friends, my Liberty, and my Life; dif pofe of me, and of all that is mine, as it feemeth beft to thee, and to the Glory of thy Holy Name. Amen.

II. Lord, I am not now mine, but thine; therefore claim me as thy Right; keep me as thy Charge, and love me as thy Child: Fight for me when I am affaulted;

heal

heal me when I am wounded; and revive me when I am fainting. Amen.

III. O God who knoweft us to be fet in the Midft of fo many and great Dangers, that by reafon of the Weaknefs of our Nature, we cannot always ftand upright; look, I beseech thee, with Pity and Compaffion, upon my Frailties and Infirmities; and grant me fuch Health of Body, and Soundness of Mind, that both in Soul and Body, I may evermore ferve thee with all my Strength and Might, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

IV. Grant me, O gracious Lord, a pure Intention of Heart, and a steadfast Resolution to defpife all Vanity; to fight the Battles of the Lord manfully, against the World, the Flesh, and the Devil; to spend my Time religioufly and usefully; to walk always as in thy Prefence; to preserve my Body and Soul in Holinefs, fit for the Habitation of the Spirit of God. Amen.

V. O Lord, increase in me Faith and Devotion; replenish my Heart with all Goodnefs, and of thy great Mercy keep me in the fame. Give me a peaceable Spirit, and a quiet Life; a fober, patient, underftanding, and religious Heart; a Soul full of Devotion to do thee Service; and do thou

thou make my Services acceptable to thee while I live, and my Soul ready for thee when I die.

Amen.

VI. O Lord, make me humble to my Superiors, and friendly to my Equals; thankful to my Benefactors; kind to my Relations, and loving and charitable to all Men, even my very Enemies. Make me gentle, and eafy to be intreated, flow to Anger, and readily admonished; fully prepared, and thoroughly furnished for every good Word and Work. Amen.

VII. O Lord, give me fpiritual Wif dom, that I may difcern what is pleafing to thee, and follow what belongs unto my Peace; and let the Knowledge and Peace of God, and of Jefus Christ our Lord, be my Guide and my Portion all the Days of my Life. Amen.

VIII. To the King Eternal, Immortal, Invifible, and only wife God, who is the ever-bleffed and adorable Trinity, be all Honour and Glory, Thanksgiving and Praife, now and for evermore. Amen.
