ZECHARIAH.

1 IN the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of 2 Iddo, the prophet, saying, The LORD hath 3 been sore displeased with your fathers. Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts Return unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Return ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith 5 the LORD. Your fathers, where are they? and 6 the prophets, do they live for ever? But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? and they turned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah the son of Berechiah, 8 the son of Iddo, the prophet, saying, I saw in the night, and behold a man riding upon a red

horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the 'bottom; and behind him there were horses, red, sorrel, and white. Then said 9 I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be. And the man that stood 10. among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. And they 11 answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest. Then the angel of the LORD answered and 12 said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years? And the LORD 13 answered the angel that talked with me with good words, even comfortable words. So the 14 angel that talked with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts: I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. And I am very sore displeased 15 with the nations that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they 'helped forward the affliction. Therefore thus saith the LORD: I 16 am returned to Jerusalem with mercies; my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth over Jerusalem. Cry yet again, saying, Thus saith 17 3 Or, shall yet the LORD of hosts: My cities through prosperity shall be spread abroad; and the LORD yet shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

And I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and 18 behold four horns. And I said unto the angel 19 that talked with me, What be these? And

he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. 20, 21 And the LORD shewed me four smiths. Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast down the horns of the nations, which lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.

And he shewed me Joshua the high priest 1 3 standing before the angel of the LORD, and 1 That is, the 1Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary. And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened 2 out of his sleep. And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have seen, and behold, a candlestick all of gold, with its bowl upon the top of it, and its seven lamps thereon; 'there are seven pipes to each of the lamps, 1 The Sept. 3 which are upon the top thereof: and two olive and Vulgate trees by it, one upon the right side of the and seven bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. pipes to the 4 And I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the head stone with shoutings of Grace, 8 grace, unto it. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent 10 me unto you. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel, even these seven, which are the eyes of the LORD; they run to and fro through the whole I earth.
