1 Or, Wonderful counsellor

born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, 'Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the 7 2 Heb. Father increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with judgement and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts shall perform this.

of Eternity.

The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it 8 hath lighted upon Israel. And all the people 9 shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart, The bricks are fallen, but we will build 10 with hewn stone: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. There- 11 3 Or, hath set fore the LORD 'shall set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and 'shall 'stir up his enemies; the Syrians before, and the Philis- 12 tines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Yet the people hath not turned unto him 13 that smote them, neither have they sought the LORD of hosts. Therefore the LORD will cut off 14 from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day. The "ancient and the honourable 15 man, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. For they that lead 16 this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are "destroyed. Therefore the 17 swallowed up. Lord shall not rejoice over their young men, neither shall he have compassion on their fatherless and widows: for every one is profane and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

11 Heb.

18

For wickedness burneth as the fire; it devoureth the briers and thorns: yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll 19 upward in thick clouds of smoke. Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land 'burnt up: 1Or, darkened the people also are as the fuel of fire; no man 20 spareth his brother. And one shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of 21 his own arm: Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

10 I

Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write perverse2 ness: to turn aside the needy from judgement, and to take away the right of the poor of my people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where 4 will ye leave your glory? They shall only bow down under the prisoners, and shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and 'to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, 8 and to cut off nations not a few. For he saith, 9 Are not my princes all of them kings? Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad?

graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and
of Samaria; shall I not, as I have done unto 11
Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and
her idols?

Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when 12
the Lord hath performed his whole work upon
mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will 'punish
the fruit of the stout heart of the king of As-
syria, and the glory of his high looks. For 13
he hath said, By the strength of my hand I
have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am
prudent and I have removed the bounds of
the peoples, and have robbed their treasures,
and I have brought down as a valiant man
'them that sit on thrones: and my hand hath 14
found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and
as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I
gathered all the earth: and there was none that
moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or
chirped. Shall the axe boast itself against him 15
that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify
itself against him that shaketh it? as if a rod
should shake them that lift it up, or as if a staff
should lift up him that is not wood.

Therefore shall the Lord, the LORD of hosts, 16 send among his fat ones leanness; and 'under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire. And the light of 17 Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. And he 18 shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be 'as when a standard bearer fainteth. And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall 19 be few, that a child may write them.

20

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, 21 in truth. A remnant shall return, even the 22 remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. For though 'thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return a consumption is determined, overflowing with 23 righteousness. For a consummation, and that determined, shall the Lord, the LORD of hosts, make in the midst of all the 'earth.

For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their 26 destruction. And the LORD of hosts shall stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod shall be over the sea, and he shall lift it up 27 after the manner of Egypt.
