PREFACE

BY THE EDITOR OF THE SIXTH EDITION (1845.)

The death of MRS. GRANT OF LAGGAN in 1838, and the subsequent publication of her MEMOIRS AND CORRESPONDENCE in 1844, have revived the public interest in her earlier writings; and, in order to meet the numerous inquiries for one of the most popular of these productions, the LETTERS FROM THE MOUNTAINS, which have been for some years out of print, the present Edition has been revised and carefully corrected by her Son. The Editor has also, occasionally, introduced some short explanatory notes respecting the persons and incidents referred to in the Correspondence, and several letters, not included in the former editions have been added.

The "Letters from the Mountains" were published nearly forty years ago, and being one of the very first works which made the public acquainted with the romantic scenery of the Scottish Highlands, and the interesting character and primitive manners of their inhabitants, the work soon attained considerable popularity, and passed through several editions. Circumstances induced the Author to withhold, in the
