FIRST DAY.

CHURCH OF THE ADVENT, San Francisco,

Tuesday, April 24th, 1894.

The Forty-fourth Annual Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of California assembled for divine service at half-past ten o'clock on the morning of the third Tuesday after Easter (April 24th, 1894), in the Church of the Advent, San Francisco, in accordance with the Canons of the Diocese and with the Resolution of the Forty-third Annual 'Convention.

In the Holy Communion the Rt. Rev. Wm. Ford Nichols, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese, was assisted by the Rev. B. W. R. Tayler, Secretary of the Southern Convocation, who read the Epistle; the Rev. F. J. Mynard, Dean of the Northern Convocation, who read the Gospel. The Bishop was further assisted in the administration by the clerical members of the Standing Committee: Rev. Hobart Chetwood, Rev. A. T. Perkins, Rev. E. B. Spalding, L. H. D.

The Rev. John Gray, Rector of St. Paul's Church, Los Angeles, preached the sermon, taking for his text, I Chronicles, xii, 32:

"Men that had understanding of the times,

to know what Israel ought to do."

After the service the delegates met for organization, the Bishop in the chair.

The Secretary called the roll of Clergymen entitled to seats, and of Parishes and Missions in union with the Convention.

A quorum of the Clergy being present and more than fifteen of the Parishes and Missions being represented by lay-delegates, the President declared the Forty-fourth Annual Con

vention of the Diocese duly organized and prepared for business.

The reading of the Order of Business was, on motion, dispensed with, and recess was taken to 3:00 P. M.

3:00 P. M.

On reassembling, the election of a Secretary being in order, the Rev. Frank H. Church was nominated, and the Assistant Secretary of the last convention was, on motion, directed to cast one ballot for the nominee and he was declared elected. The Secretary appointed Col. A. S. Hubbard to be Assistant Secretary.

The President then appointed the following

On Incorporation and Admission of Parishes and Missions: The Rev. D. O. Kelley, B. McKinne, L. S. Porter.

On Finance: Geo. W. Gibbs, W. A. M. Van Bokkelen, Treasurer, W. B. Hooper, John Wigmore, D. M. Kent.

On Auditing: A. H. Phelps, W. L. Chalmers, H. C. Davis. On Canons: The Rev. R. C. Foute, the Rev. C. L. Miel, the Rev. B. W. R. Tayler, A. N. Drown, H. E. Highton, R. M. Sherman.

On Christian Education: The Rev. E. B. Spalding, L.H.D., the Rev. E. B. Church, the Rev. W. A. Brewer, Prof. C. M. Gayley, Joseph Powning.

On Church Charities: The Rev. H. B. Restarick, the Rev. E. J. Lion, William Doxey, Prof. Welcker, Ira D. Thompson. On the State of the Church: The Rev. Robert Ritchie, the Rev. A. S. Clark, George W. Parsons.

On Unfinished Business: The Rev. J. A. Emery, Alex. Gray, W. Burbeck.

The Committee on Credentials submitted its report and recommended that the omissions in three certificates of lay

delegates be supplied and the delegates seated, which was, on due motion, adopted.

The following list of delinquent Parishes and Mission was presented and read:

Sundry resolutions proposing amendments to the Canons were received and referred to the Committee on Canons.

The Rev. Hobart Chetwood presented the Report of the Standing Committee and of the Trustees of the Eastman Educational Fund.

Report

OF THE STANDING COMMITTEE.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 24, 1894.

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of California respectfully reports to the Forty-fourth Annual Convention of said Diocese its official acts during the convention year 1893-94.

June 10th, 1893, the Committee organized by the election of the Rev. R. C. Foute as President, and the Rev. Alfred T. Perkins as Secretary. Candidates for Holy Orders.-Aug. 19th, 1893, Harvey S. Hansen; January 22nd, 1894, Henry Alfred Brown and Griffin Marshall Cutting, and March 3rd, 1894, Edward Morgan were recommended to the Bishop as candidates for Holy Orders.

The Diaconate.-Aug. 19th, 1893, George Cadell Mitchell; Oct. 25th, 1893, William Stoddart Dearing, and March 7th, 1894, Richard Hodges Gushee were recommended to the Bishop for admission to the Sacred Order of Deacons.

The Episcopate.-Canonical consent was given to the consecration to the Episcopate of the several Bishops-elect as follows: June 10th, 1893, the Rev. Ellison Capers, D.D., to be Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina; Aug. 19th, 1893, the Rev. Joseph Blount Cheshire, to be Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina; Nov. 29, 1893, the Rev. Arthur Crawsbay Alliston Hall, M. A., to be Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont; and March 3d, 1894, the Rev. John Brockenborough Newton, M. D., to be Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia.

Other Official Acts.—March 7th, 1894, permission was given St. Peter's Mission, Coronado, to exchange four lots in Block No. 70, for lots Nos. 17, 18, 19 and 20 in Block No. 37, Coronado.
