PREFACE.

THIS Work, hitherto wanted, may be understood by any

ordinary capacity, without the aid of Comments. The errors that occasioned Deism are corrected; the origin of Nations (Gen. x.) is traced; the ancient manners and customs are displayed; the right sense of Babel's plan, Jephtha's oblation, the Endor impostor, Eccles. xii. and Solomon's Song; and in what places the prophets speak of the Millennium pointed out; Daniel, and the seals, trumpets, and vials of the Revelation, with the times and events they contain, displayed.

The philosophical and medical Commentary, describes the ancient oriental figures and curiosities; the elements, earth, water, air, and fire or light, with their curiosities and medical virtues, for preventing and removing diseases, being the original medicine which all can use; the kingdoms of nature, minerals, plants, and animals, with their curiosities and medical properties; the true theory of the earth, and of the deluge, the origin of evil, and of languages and writing, of negroes, heathen gods, and mythology; geography, astronomy, &c. with various other illustrations, critical, historical, philological and moral, and occasional reflections. The Commentary contains the substance of the Author's comprehensive course of Philosophical Medical Lectures, and also of his Philological publications, and of history in the fulfilling of prophecies; the Old Testament has a Philological Preface, proving Revelation, &c. and an Appendix supplying the history of 400 years between the Old and New Testaments, the true scriptural rational doctrine of the Trinity, and that Christ came into the world at the fittest time; the rules of interpretation, &c. This has a Preface tracing the time of the year when Christ was born, and his genealogy, reconciling Matthew's and Luke's, &c.; and an Appendix to the Acts, containing the lives and deaths of the Apostles, not mentioned therein; the crisis of the missionaries and of the stage, the perfection of the canon.

The Author having revised the Hebrew, &c. Eastern Literature, with particular attention, and laboured to revive them, during a number of years, on both sides of the globe, being importuned to do it here, and to go to do it there, in an age wherein they are much neglected, though the most ancient, entertaining, and instructing, as being the source of the Pagan theology
