calls upon you to pour out your heart which you have lifted up to GOD, in an act of love, as the heavenly vision begins to open upon the eye of your faith, saying, "let us give thanks unto our LORD GOD." Be prepared again to make the response heartily and aloud, "it is meet and right so to do." The Priest then

turns to the Altar, and in CHRIST'S Name leads you into the midst of the heavenly Host, that you may join with Angels and Archangels and all the Company of Heaven. Do not attempt to repeat this after the Priest, but simply try to raise your thoughts to things above. The Preface is the pathway of the soul into the presence of GOD. Follow it earnestly in spirit, but not out loud.

Upon Ascension Day, and seven days after.

Through Thy most dearly beloved SON JESUS CHRIST our LORD; Who after His most glorious Resurrection manifestly appeared to all His Apostles, and in their sight ascended up into heaven to prepare a place for us; that where He is, thither we might also ascend, and reign with Him in glory. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Upon Whit-Sunday, and six days after.

Through JESUS CHRIST our LORD; according to Whose most true promise, the HOLY GHOST came down as at this time from heaven with a sudden great sound, as it had been a mighty wind, in the likeness of fiery tongues, lighting upon the Apostles, to teach them, and to lead them to all truth; giving them both the gift of divers languages, and also boldness with fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel unto all nations; whereby we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of Thee, and of Thy SON JESUS CHRIST. Therefore with Angels, &c.

At the end of the Preface comes the Hymn of the Angels, which they utter unceasingly, before the Throne of GOD, and we may all join with them, because we are coming into the presence of the ALMIGHTY. After each of which Prefaces shall immediately be said or sung,

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Thy glorious Name; evermore praising Thee, and saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD GOD of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory: glory be to Thee, O LORD Most High. We do not presume to come to this Thy Table, O merciful LORD, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under Thy table. But Thou art the same LORD, Whose property is always to have mercy: grant us therefore, gracious LORD, so to

THE CANON.

The Canon, which is the act of Consecration, represents to us the Crucifixion of our LORD JESUS CHRIST; for it is done as He Himself commanded, in remembrance of His death: it was by His death that He became our Sacrifice; therefore when we are permitted to join with Him, in continuing that Sacrifice, He would have us remember His death.

It is in this part of the service, then, that we actually unite with CHRIST, as Head of the
