PREFERMENTS AND MEMORANDA.

In the racation after Hilary Term, Sir JOHN STUART, one of the Vice Chancellors, resigned his office. He was succeeded by JOHN WICKENS, Esq., of Lincoln's Inn, who shortly afterwards received the honour of knighthood.

At the commencement of Michaelmas Term, 1871, Sir JAMES SHAW WILLES, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, was sworn one of Her Majesty's most honourable Privy Council.

At the same time, Sir MONTAGUE EDWARD SMITH, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, was appointed under the Judicial Committee Act, 1871,-34 & 35 Vict. cap. 91, to act as one of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and was Sworn a member of that most honourable Board.

Sir James WILLIAM COLVILE, ex-Chief Justice of Calcutta, and a Privy Councillor, was appointed under the same Statute to act as one of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

Sir ROBERT PORRETT COLLIER, Her Majesty's Attorney General, was appointed one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, in the room of Sir MONTAGUE EDWARD SMITH, having first been created a Serjeant-at-Law, when he gave rings with the motto “Semper fidelis." He was sworn a member of the Privy Council.

Sir John DUKE COLERIDGE, Her Majesty's Solicitor General, was appointed Her Majesty's Attorney General.

GEORGE JESSEL, Esq., of Lincoln's Inn, one of Her Majesty's Counsel, was appointed Her Majesty's Solicitor General.
