MARKETS.

The holidays which are now going on prevent our commercial report from being of much interest. The rains have not yet completely ceased, and their unusual continuance is highly favourable to the grain crops, promising another abundant harvest to the cultivator. Business closed in this city on the 13th instant for the holidays, and during the three working days which intervened since the date of our last report, but few transactions worthy of notice took place, operations having been chiefly confined to the shipment of goods previously purchased. The export market closed without any alteration in prices, former rates having been maintained, particularly those for sugar and saltpetre, which continued favourite articles for shipment.

The import market closed firmly for most descriptions of cotton piece goods, metals, and mule twist, although the demand for the latter was dull.

MADRAS. MISCELLANEOUS. LOCAL.

We are informed that Veterinary Surgeon James Western of the Body Guard, has applied for leave of absence for three years, to proceed to England on furlough.-Athenæum, Oct. 19. The 34th or C. L. I. will, we learn, leave Mangalore for Vellore, on the 20th December. - Ibid.

THE MONSOON.-We can hardly say whether the monsoon has really set in, or whether it is on the point of doing so. The barometer has been getting up slowly and steadily all the week, and was higher yesterday morning, than it has before been. The wind has been occasionally from the right quarter, but not with the usual strength of the north-east monsoon. We have had a good deal of rain, and the prospect of a favourable season is very cheering.-Ibid. Oct. 23.
